GUILTY UT - Laura Hauck, 52, found dead in freezer, Bountiful, 4 Aug 2006 *Insanity*

There are 2 threads about this here in Crimes In The News. Could a Mod please combine them?

A Utah teenager charged with his mother's grisly murder will remain jailed in Missoula, Mont., this weekend as his family members bury the slain woman less than an hour away.

Jeremy Jacob Hauck, 18, has been charged in Farmington with first-degree felony murder and second-degree felony theft. An arrest warrant affidavit accuses him of shooting his mother, Laura Hauck, twice in the head with a .22-caliber gun. Court records say the teen then slit her throat and dumped her body in a chest-style freezer at her condominium in Bountiful where she and Jeremy lived together...

..."The way he was in the courtroom, that's what he was always like," said Faye Garlock, Hauck's sister who lived near the family in Bountiful. "He was no different. Just like a blank sheet of paper."
Hauck's family has described Jeremy as "unusual" and "a mystery." Relatives also said Laura Hauck doted over her son, who was a diligent student with a 4.0 grade point average. She was supportive and proud of his accomplishments and of his success at recent national competitions in business and health occupation...

Police in Bountiful said because a .22 is fairly low-caliber weapon it is possible that Laura Hauck did not die instantly from being shot, leading the teen to cut her throat.

How could he do this to his own Mother? I think that this kid has some serious issues.

So I still haven't been able to find anything in regards to motive of this kid's actions. Is anyone in here local to Utah?

Saturday, August 19, 2006 Teen charged with mother's murder appears before judge

FARMINGTON -- The Bountiful teenager whose mother was found dead inside a freezer made an initial appearance in 2nd District Court on Friday.

Jeremy Hauck, 18, is charged with first-degree murder in the death of Laura Hauck, who was shot twice in the head and had her throat cut. Her body was found in a chest-style freezer and had to be thawed before a positive identification was made.

Jeremy Hauck's cousin John Garlock attended Friday's hearing and said it was chilling to see him in court.

"It was very hard to see Jeremy. He's caused a lot of frustration, fear, anger and confusion," Garlock said after the hearing. "We want to know what happened. Why he did this."

Garlock said he hoped that eventually the death of his aunt would be explained through either a trial or a plea deal. He said he didn't care which direction the case moved as long as it had one outcome.

"I just want to know that he's not comfortable and won't be happy for the rest of his life," he said.
<snip>
"We still don't have a motive," Steve Major, Davis County deputy attorney, said after the hearing.

He said Hauck has not been talking to investigators since his arrest.

I actually live about 5 min from where this happened.
I have not heard anything new, or any motive.
If I do... I will post it.

Man to undergo insanity evaluation in case of Utah mom found in freezer

After years of working to restore competency to Jeremy Jacob Hauck, 23, medical experts now agree the man is able to stand trial. A judge, however, will not rule on the competency issue until Hauck undergoes further evaluation — this time as part of an insanity defense.

"He’s made progress while at the State Hospital," defense attorney Todd Utzinger said after Monday’s hearing in 2nd District Court. "We’re just putting that [competency issue] on hold until we go through the evaluation into his mental state at the time. That will enable us to keep him in the state hospital so that he’ll remain stable."

A judge is scheduled to hear the results of the new evaluations next month, though Utzinger said both sides anticipate the process will take longer than that.

Hauck was 18 when prosecutors say he shot 51-year-old Laura Hauck and cut her throat as she slept. He then allegedly dragged her body to the basement of their Bountiful home and stuffed her body into a freezer.

After 6 ½ years of legal proceedings and competency evaluations, the case of Jeremy Hauck came to a sudden and dramatic end Monday.

During what was supposed to be a routine status hearing, Hauck waived his right to a jury trial. Second District Judge John Morris then immediately declared Hauck — accused of shooting and killing his mother and stuffing her body in a freezer — not guilty by reason of insanity and sentenced him to 15 years to life at the Utah State Hospital...

Hauck reportedly suffered from schizophrenia and exhibited some traits associated with autism.
