CEDAR CITY — Human remains were discovered in a drainage tunnel running beneath I-15 in Cedar City, authorities say.

Cedar City police officers responded to a call about the discovery of remains at approximately 2 p.m. on Saturday, according to an emailed statement from Cedar City Police Lt. Jimmy Roden.

Officials did not immediately release the exact location of the tunnel.

Human remains discovered in Cedar City in 'advanced stage of decomposition'

Cedar City Police Department, the Iron County Sheriff’s Office and the Office of the Medical Examiner recovered the skeletal remains Sunday morning, Cedar City Police Lt. Jimmy Roden said in a press release posted Sunday afternoon.

According to the release, two juvenile boys discovered the body in a storm drain under Interstate 15 on Saturday and immediately reported the incident to their parents. The boys’ families contacted police.

Police say the remains were “in an advanced state of decomposition,” so much so that investigators haven’t been able to identify the individual’s sex yet. The remains will be taken to the Medical Examiner for an autopsy.

Police say they will provide more information once the autopsy is finished.

Cedar City remains confirmed to be Johnny Dale Rollins:

The skeletal remains were sent to the medical examiner’s office, Cedar City police said, and dental records confirmed the deceased person was 63-year-old Johnny Dale Rollins. A wallet found on the body confirmed the identification.

Police say Rollins was reporting missing after he left his home for a walk in March 2018. When he was reported missing, family members told police that Rollins has health issues related to a previous stroke, as well as early stages of Alzheimer’s.
