Virginia State Police canceled a Critically Missing Adult Alert Sunday morning for a Virginia Beach woman reported missing the day prior. State Police said it was canceled at the request of VBPD.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia State Police issued a Critically Missing Adult Alert on behalf of Virginia Beach Police Department late Saturday night.

The alert states that the Virginia Beach Police Department is looking for Marie Darshaun Covington, a 5'1" 40-year-old black woman weighing 115 lbs. with brown eyes and black hair.

According to police she was last seen on August 17, 2022, at 10:00 p.m. around the area of Thalia Trace Drive in Virginia Beach. She was possibly wearing a gray sweatshirt, gray sweatpants and a black baseball cap.

Authorities say her disappearance poses a credible threat to her health and safety as determined by the investigating agency.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - Virginia State Police issued a Critically Missing Adult Alert on behalf of Virginia Beach Police Department late Saturday night and then canceled it around 1 a.m. Sunday.

State police say the cancellation came at the request of Virginia Beach Police.

The inquiry will focus on the “timeline of our initial response, reporting, and public notification” surrounding the search for Covington, according to a statement provided by the department. Covington was reported missing at 10:25 p.m. on Aug. 18, after having last been seen with 43-year-old Gary Morton the previous day.

Two days after the missing persons report was filed, Covington was found dead and Morton was arrested and charged with second-degree murder.

Morton was arrested by Virginia State Police after troopers attempted a traffic stop for a moving violation on a vehicle. Morton was driving and refused to stop, police said, and the state police chased him until he stopped in Norfolk. State police then notified Virginia Beach that the vehicle was connected to Covington’s disappearance.

The third alert issued this year originated Aug. 20 from Virginia Beach, following the Aug. 18 disappearance of Marie Covington. She was found dead — hours after an Ashanti Alert was issued — from what police described as “apparent homicidal violence” in a Norfolk residence.

The man with whom Covington was last seen, 43-year-old Gary Morton, was arrested following a traffic stop and charged with second-degree murder in connection with her death.

The Virginia Beach Police Department launched an internal investigation into its handling of Covington’s missing persons investigation in late August. A month in, spokesperson Melissa Johnston said the investigation remains active, but declined to provide additional details.

Gary Morton, 44, has been convicted of killing Marie Covington in August 2022. The charges Morton was convicted of include first-degree murder through abduction, abduction, malicious wounding and shooting at an occupied vehicle.

Morton, who was Covington's alleged boyfriend, pleaded guilty to concealing a dead body on Oct. 10.

While being questioned by Norfolk police investigators following the pursuit, Morton confessed to having shot and killed Covington, to hiding her body in a trash can in the Huntersville area, and to eluding the officers because he was scared to be caught, court records confirmed.

Investigators found Covington’s body, along with used cleaning supplies and a car seat cover, in an outdoor household trash bin the following night. It is unclear when — between her abduction and Morton fleeing to Pittsburgh — Covington died. The medical examiner ruled Covington’s cause of death as a gunshot wound to her left temple.
