The Daily Press reported that it took the jury two hours to reach a guilty verdict against Green, who now faces up to 41 years in prison when he is sentenced on Feb. 17. According to the report, the sentence includes 40 years on the second-degree murder count and another year to serve on the felony charge of leaving the scene of an accident.

Vernon E. Green II, 41, is accused of driving off after officers approached his parked car and questioned him on suspicion of smoking marijuana. An officer at the driver’s side door, Katherine “Katie” Thyne, was trapped between the door and frame of the fleeing vehicle as it struck a tree a block away.

Thyne’s handgun pressed into her side upon impact, causing a fatal injury to her pelvis. The 24-year-old’s death made her the first Newport News police officer to be slain in the line of duty in more than 25 years.

Rest in peace, Officer Thyne. :(

Vernon Green II, who faces up to 41 years in prison after a jury found him guilty of charges including second-degree murder in November, was scheduled to be sentenced in the Newport News Circuit Court. Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Dennis Guthinger said Green filed several motions — including a failed motion for a mistrial — that were instead addressed on Friday, forcing the sentencing date to be postponed.

The motion will be addressed in court on March 31.
