Former Virginia Lt. Gov. Justin Fairfax and his wife are dead following a murder-suicide Thursday morning in Annandale, according to the Fairfax County Police Department (FCPD).

Shortly after midnight, officers responded to the 8100 block of Guinevere Drive for a death investigation. Detectives said they discovered a man and a woman dead inside a residence.

The agency's preliminary findings indicate Justin Fairfax, 47, shot his wife, Dr. Cerina W. Fairfax, before turning the gun on himself, police said.

The couple got married on June 17, 2006 after meeting at Duke University. They have two children who are teenagers. According to court records, the couple was going through a divorce

The media are reporting this as a complicated or messy divorce, which is likely correct, but I haven't seen any reporting that emphasizes that Justin Fairfax murdered his wife. That needs to be emphasized, IMO. Hopefully the news will shift to that focus soon. Thank goodness the children weren't shot as well, and I hope that Cerina Fairfax has family who can care for them at this time. God rest her soul.

Not the OP but I presume it’s because the scenario bears some similarity to this one (each involving a married male politician with kids, whose career has been completely derailed due to allegations of sexual assault, and whose wife may/may not choose to split from him as a result).

Cerina Fairfax said in court filings that they separated nearly two years ago. But they were still living in the same house with their children, who police said were both home at the time of their deaths.

The judge overseeing the divorce had told Justin Fairfax to move out by the end of April, writing “it is clear tensions in the Fairfax home have been extremely high for an extended period of time.”
