Venezuela fire: 68 die in Carabobo police station cells


A fire at a police station in the Venezuelan city of Valencia, in Carabobo state, has left 68 people dead, government officials say.

The blaze reportedly started after prisoners set fire to mattresses in an attempt to break out on Wednesday.

Police used tear gas to disperse relatives who surrounded the station after news of the fire broke.

At least 68 people have died during a fire that erupted in a Venezuela police station after a riot involving prisoners.

The fire reportedly broke out after inmates set fire to mattresses in a bid to break free from the General Command of the Carabobo Police headquarters in Valencia, a town about 100 miles west of Caracas, on Wednesday.

Police were forced to use tear gas to disperse the crowd gathered outside the police station after the fire, as desperate relatives tried to find out what had happened to their loved ones.
