A British woman and her South African fiance have been found dead in a holiday villa in Vietnam, local police have said.

Greta Marie Otteson, 33, was discovered by staff dead on a bed in a first-floor room in Hoi An, a coastal city in the central region of the south-east Asian nation, at around 11:18 local time (04:18 GMT) on 26 December, police said in a statement on Monday.

Her fiance Els Arno Quinton, 36, was found dead on a bed in another room in the villa that had reportedly been locked from the inside.

Police said a preliminary inspection of the bodies had found no signs of external force and that the rooms showed no sign of burglary.

''Their deaths comes just days after they posted a video on YouTube to announce their engagement. It showed them walking in Hoi An, Vietnam, with Greta in a white dress and the two holding hands. "This shoot was charged with so much emotion, reminding us how powerful the union of two souls can be. We will miss you great souls,' Red Eye Studios, the video company captioned the clip.''

Maybe something the couple ate or drank? speculation, imo.

Separate bedrooms with one locked from the inside? It seems like an odd choice. Perhaps other people were in the B and B necesitating a locked door?

well..I don't get the separate rooms bit. Can speculate...both felt sick and wanted privacy? Pretty blank after that.
Even if specuating a worst-case murder-suicide, they would be together. Nope... gotta be some kind of poisoning

so sad.....

Carbon monoxide poisoning? Legionnaire's?

Reminds me of this case of the Saudi sisters in Sydney, still unexplained...

From tripadvisor reviews, it seems to be a villa within which individual rooms can be booked. So perhaps more odd that her door wasn't locked than that his was? Although might just be personal habit/preference/safety conscious levels. According to that article they booked into the villa in July, so perhaps when they first arrived their relationship wasn't at the same level of intimacy as it reached by later on. Or even having said that, for nearly six months, I can imagine wanting your own space if it's the main place you are living.

Edited for typoes

The Sun (I am sprinkling salt over myself as I say this) are obviously drawing a connection between this case of methanol poisoning in Laos.

If they are connected then this quote is chilling:

'[Ruby Thomas, from Edinburgh] said: “People think it’s just a problem from one hostel, but no one knows the source of this. Is there another batch of this poison out there somewhere or did someone do this?”'

What about those little white bowls on the floor close to the crime scene tech's feet? Did they have a cat or dog?

I think there's evidence this was an honour killing, or was because they were escaping an inevitable honour killing

Poison is usually done by women. If this was intentional, then the poison was probably meant for Greta. However, I keep thinking about the Idaho 4 murders, which shows that beautiful women can be targeted by rejected males.

It was methanol poisoning.
The drinks were bought in a restaurant.
They were "homemade" there.
Anybody could buy them.
I don't think the victims were targeted.

They simply didn't buy bottled, safe drinks
but, unfortunately, local ones.
