World-class violinist Vanessa Mae amazed many when she suddenly changed career and qualified as a skier at the Olympics in Sochi this year, at age 35. She came last out of 67, racing for Thailand under the surname of her Thai father, as Vanessa Vanakorn.

Now she's been given a four-year ban by the International Ski Federation for taking part in races which were fixed to help her qualify, at the expense of better competitors.

'The governing body said its hearing panel found 'to its comfortable satisfaction' that the results of a series of races in Slovenia in January were manipulated in order for Mae to achieve the qualifying points required to compete at the Games.'

'FIS found the races in Slovenia were organised at the request of Mae's management company and the Thailand Olympic Committee in order to enable her to meet the qualifying criteria'

An Italian and four Slovenian officials have also been banned for their role in the scandal.

ETA: It was the giant slalom she raced in at Sochi.
