SUMMARY OF INCIDENT:

Search efforts have begun in an attempt to locate a 69 year old male who had been missing since 1630 hrs. on Thursday afternoon. The male who was identified as Ellsworth Spear was training his hunting dogs on Gore Road in Plainfield. Spear told his wife he needed to retrieve one of the dogs and had not been heard from since. The Vermont State Police were called to assist in locating Spear at approximately 2248 hrs. Spear was described as wearing a blue denim shirt and blue jeans and stand approximately 5’10” and 250 pounds.

Members of the Vermont State Police and Fish and Game have been searching through the night hours and will resume search operations this morning.

RECENT ALTERCATION - JULY 10

"Members of the Vermont Warden Service responded to a call from Newbury resident Ellsworth Spear, 61, on Sunday, July 10.

Mr. Spear alleged that he, another adult hunter, and a minor were stopped by Ms. Nanni while driving on Red Brook Road in Groton with hunting dogs secured in their truck during Vermont’s June 1–September 15 bear hound training season.

Mr. Spear alleged that Ms. Nanni blocked the road, instigated an altercation, and used bear spray on him and his companions
. Mr. Spear and companions retreated from the scene and called Vermont State Police Dispatch after returning to cell service."

Spear said he, his friend and his friend’s 13-year-old grandson were out looking for bears but hadn’t stopped the pickup or released the hounds when the woman walked into the middle of the road near her driveway and confronted them.

Spear said he told his companions to film the incident, having learned his lesson, he said, from having people misrepresent his actions.

He's become something of a lightning rod in the debate over ethical hunting in Vermont, unabashedly defending his sport against animal rights groups who advocate for hunting restrictions. He was a central figure in a Seven Days cover story from last September headlined "Wildlife Wars."
