Duane Ludwig Winget is a Wisconsin Army National Guard Soldier from New Auburn, Wisconsin, who went missing on February 15, 1962 from Fort Lewis Military Base (Now named Joint Base Lewis-McChord), Washington. Sp4c Duane Ludwig Winget was assigned to Co. D, 1ST Battle Gp., 128TH Inf., Rice Lake, WI,and it is believed he may have drowned during river crossing training on the Nisqually River. His unit was crossing hand-over-hand on a single-rope bridge about 6 feet above the water. They hooked their pistol belts over the rope as a safety precaution, but Sp4c. Winget lost his grip, his belt unbuckled, and he fell into the rushing water. Sp4c. Winget was caught by a safety rope downstream and a pair of fellow Soldiers dove into the river to go to his aid, but he was swept past the safety rope before they could reach him. A large search effort was launched, including his unit, Army divers, Army helicopters, the Pierce Co. Sheriff’s Dept., and local Native Americans with intimate knowledge of the river. His body was never located. Duane Ludwig Winget is 23 years old as of the date he went missing in February, 1962. Duane Winget is described as a white male standing 5 feet 5 inches tall to 5 feet 7 inches tall and weighing aproximately 145 to 170 pounds. Duane Winget has red/auburn hair, blue eyes, and wears glasses. Dental information / charting and a DNA sample has been submitted to NAMUS. Details of Disappearance

Winget was last seen at the Fort Lewis Military Base (now named the Joint Base Lewis-McChord) in Washington on February 15, 1962. He was a specialist fourth class in the Army National Guard and was participating in hand-over-hand river crossing training on a single-rope bridge six feet over the the Nisqually River.

The soldiers hooked their pistol belts over the rope, but Winget lost his grip, his belt came unbuckled, and he fell into the river. The others came to his aid, but he was swept away and past a safety rope before they could help him. He has never been heard from again and is presumed drowned.

Although Duane Winget is still missing, he is presumed to be dead. The US Veterans Affairs Office issued a memorial headstone which was placed in his family plot at Zion Cemetery in Wisconsin.
Duane's parents and a brother have since passed away.
