Glenn “Austin” Oldfield, 39, had texted his girlfriend on Sept. 17. Oldfield, who is from Louisville, Ky., was planning to spend two weeks camping in Southwest Washington, according to a sheriff’s news release.

Two days later, two hunters talked with him near Lone Butte, approximately 31 miles north of Carson. Oldfield told the hunters he was lost, but when they attempted to show him the way to the road, he turned and ran the opposite direction.

Searchers later found his car and a campsite, but he was not there. Over the weekend, about 50 searchers combed the area, according to Sheriff Dave Brown.

According to the FB page, he intitially drove 2500 miles to go on a Vision Quest, a spiritual journey, and took hallucinogens (mushrooms) as a part of it. He attended Rainbow Gatherings in the past and there was one not far from where he went missing.

In the fall of 2015, Austin vanished in the mountains of the Pacific Northwest

After hearing years of reports about people who seem to disappear into the wild, I decided to dig a little deeper.

On August 6, 2016 I set out to find Austin Oldfield, who has been missing for 10 months. Austin left Kentucky for a month long camping trip in the Cascades Mountains, not far from Portland, Oregon. Before he vanished, two hunters witnessed him acting strangely.

I trace his last known steps and set up a grid to comb the forest for clues. His disappearance caused me to ask- Why did Austin disappear? What where his motives? Where might he have gone. How can I avoid hazards on my own adventures?

Details of Disappearance

Oldfield traveled from his hometown of Louisville, Kentucky to Washington state for a two-week camping trip. His girlfriend last heard from him by text message on September 17, 2015. He was supposed to return home on October 1, but he never did and has never been heard from again. On October 13, his car and campsite were found at the entrance to Gifford Pinchot National Forest in southern Washington.

An extensive search of the area turned up no indication of Oldfield's whereabouts. The last persons known to have seen him reported he was acting oddly and didn't make much sense. Witnesses reported giving him a ride to the Trout Lake area on September 19. His case remains unsolved. Both Washington and Kentucky police are investigating.
