Article From May 16, 1999:
YAKIMA - They were like two sides of a coin, inseparable as children.

One smart and crafty, the other slow and spiritual. Born a year apart, sisters Ruby and Julie complemented each other.

They grew up with four other siblings in a chaotic house where food on the table was sometimes stolen from neighboring Sunnyside farms.

When they reached adulthood, their methods of survival were unconventional at best, illegal at worst.
"I didn't get to tell either of my girls goodbye," said their mother, Judy Moranda, who wonders how two bolts of lightning could strike the same family tree.
Julie Moranda, who would be 40, has been missing for nearly a decade. Ruby Moranda-Robles, 41, was beaten to death March 12.
Both, their mother said, have been written off by a society quick to forget dead and missing women who broke the law to survive. But court records and police reports don't describe her daughters, she said.

"It's what they did, not who they were," she said.
Julie was always running and was seldom predictable. When she was about 9, Julie attempted to run away from home by trading food stamps for a bus ticket, Moranda remembers.

The family painted a murky picture of Julie's life. She jumped from job to job, once working as a roller-skating waitress at a Texas hamburger stand.
Julie had two sons with a boyfriend. Now 16 and 18, they live in the Lower Valley with their father.
Because Julie tended to run, because she was rebellious, her mother holds hope she's alive.
"I keep thinking she will show up some day," Moranda said. "It doesn't matter if your child is older. When they are missing, it's the same feeling as if they were little ones."
