She was a self-employed massage therapist in 2005 and her clients were mostly in the Seattle, Washington area. Her loved ones do not believe Ohana was dating anyone at the time of her disappearance. Barney Burke of the Port Townsend Leader wrote a great piece about Lyn Ohana’s disappearance back in April of 2006

By Barney Burke, Leader Staff Writer

After four months of searching, the only clue in the disappearance of Lyn Marie (Carter) Ohana might be the indications of a scent-tracking dog brought in by a private investigator her family hired.

Ohana, 49, has been missing since Dec. 8 from the home she shared with her mother in Port Townsend. That evening, she asked her mother, Tillie Carter, to leave the porch light on, saying that she would return later without indicating where she was going.

She never came home.

Three weeks after her disappearance, the family hired Harry Oakes, a private investigator from Longview, Wash., said Lyn’s brother, Bob Carter.

The dog tracked Ohana’s scent from her Monroe Street home to the former Golden Age Club next to Chetzemoka Park, a few blocks away, Carter said. That’s where the trail stopped, “like she got into a car,” said Carter.

Ohana did not have a driver’s license. She usually walked or took public transit, including trips to Seattle, where she worked part-time as a massage therapist. The owner of that business called the family home several days after Ohana disappeared, inquiring as to why she had not shown up for work.

At Fort Worden State Park, the dog didn’t just pick up her scent, it picked up a “death scent,” Carter said. The dog is trained to communicate with body language when it detects a death scent associated with the person it is tracking, he said. The scent was coming from the city side of Fort Worden, said Carter.

The dog was brought to Rat Island, the Portage Canal Bridge at Indian Island, the Resort at Port Ludlow, and the Hood Canal Bridge. In each location, the dog indicated finding the death scent, and it seemed to be coming from the direction of Seattle, he said.

“That leads me to believe Lyn was taken to Seattle,” Carter said. The dog also found the death scent in the vicinity of the Edmonds ferry terminal, he said.

There have been no further attempts to track Ohana with dogs, said Carter and Port Townsend Police Sgt. Ed Green.

“We have nothing to support any theory at this point,” Green said. There is no evidence that she was harmed, and no evidence that she disappeared of her own volition, as people sometimes do, he explained.

“I can’t emphasize enough,” Sgt. Green pleaded, “Anybody who’s got anything” should contact Port Townsend police at 360-385-2322”
