''EVERETT, Wash. — A man has been arrested in connection to the 1989 murder of a Washington woman, the Everett Police Department announced on Tuesday.

Mary Ann Daniels, a 33-year-old disabled woman, was found murdered in her home on the 2100 block of Hoyt Avenue on Feb. 1, 1989. The EPD said she had been placed into the transitional living housing by her caseworker.''

''Thanks to advancements in DNA technology since her killing, evidence gathered at the time was finally able to be processed. According to the Everett Police Department, DNA from biological material left on Daniels' body was a match with former Everett resident Joseph Andrew Jacquez. His DNA was also found on the murder weapon, according to EPD.
Jacquez was arrested in Clark County, Nevada, on Saturday, Jan. 25. He will soon be extradited to Snohomish County. ''

A Las Vegas man was arrested last week in connection to a 36-year-old Everett cold case killing. The victim, 33-year-old Mary Ann Daniels, was a disabled woman who lived in a transitional living facility off Hoyt Avenue in Everett. She was killed in her residence on Feb. 1, 1989.

"She faced unfortunate circumstances while living in a transitional rental house which her social worker placed her in. She should have protected her from this happening, but instead put her in danger, and in the end, Mary Ann lost her life. She had a hard life and is now at peace. Thanks to all that made this happen.” Daniels Lundin continued.

“Mary Ann was trusting, carefree and always believed the good in people. She has never been forgotten by her family," said Terry Lee Saline, Mary Ann's brother

''An autopsy determined Daniels likely was killed Jan. 28 and strangled with three ligatures: a bra, a purse strap and electrical cord.
At the time, police questioned three men: the property manager, a man Daniels previously has a relationship with, and Daniels' neighbor, Jacquez. ''

''Jacquez and Daniels had moved in to their apartments about the same date on Jan. 9, 1989. Jacquez told police he had no relationship with Daniels outside of being casual neighbors, according to charging documents.
Fast forward to 2022, and a genetic genealogist used standard genealogy methods to determine Jacquez was likely genetically related to a DNA profile collected from evidence at the scene.''

After learning that Jacquez was living in Las Vegas, an Everett police detective contacted Las Vegas police and requested help in obtaining a covert DNA sample from Jacquez, the charges say. An undercover officer followed Jacquez to a restaurant, collected his discarded beer bottle and had it shipped to the Everett Police Department.

Male DNA from Daniels’ cheek swab and blood found on the bra tied around her neck matched DNA recovered from the beer bottle, the charges say. As of last week, there were several items still awaiting forensic testing and detectives planned to ask a judge for permission to collect a reference DNA sample from Jacquez so direct comparisons can be made, according to the charges

''At the time of Mary Ann’s death, forensic DNA technology was in its infancy and despite efforts to identify a suspect, the person responsible could not be identified. Mary Ann’s death was a mystery for 36 years. Over the years, investigators have worked tirelessly to uncover the truth and bring justice to the person who murdered Mary Ann.

Everett Police Department Detective Susan Logothetti enlisted the assistance of multiple laboratories, including Othram, in hopes that advancements in modern DNA technology could help to finally solve the mystery of who murdered Mary Ann. In 2020, the Everett Police Department submitted some of the evidence from the 1989 crime scene to Othram.''
