Matthew Warren Dean

CLALLAM BAY — Search-and-rescue crews, scent dogs and a drone failed this week to discover what happened to Matthew Warren Dean.

The Makah tribal member’s snowbound white 2007 Toyota Camry was discovered Jan. 15 in a shallow ditch on state Highway 112 southeast of Clallam Bay.

Footprints embedded in 18 inches of snow led away from the vehicle, heading toward Neah Bay, authorities said.

Family members said Dean had not been seen since the morning of Jan. 14.

Brian King, Clallam County chief criminal deputy, said Friday the intent of the renewed search on Wednesday was to sweep an area near Dean’s vehicle.

“There’s no new evidence to identify his current whereabouts,” King said, adding further searches are not planned.

The case remains in the same status as it was a month ago, he said.

“We continue to evaluate the information we have and to think of other possibilities or things we can employ that may reveal something.”

About 15 search-and-rescue personnel from the Clallam County, Kitsap and Grays Harbor sheriff’s departments searched from about 9:30 a.m. to nightfall Wednesday.

Four scent-dog teams covered the terrain while a drone flew overhead.

Dean, about 5-feet, 10-inches tall and 155 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

He was last seen wearing black sneakers and black or gray sweatpants.

Anyone with information on Dean’s whereabouts should call 360-452-4545.

Deputies searching for Clallam County man who disappeared during snowstorm

The Clallam County Sheriff’s Office said 38-year-old Mathew Warren Dean hasn’t been heard from or seen since the morning of Jan. 14. His family reported him missing the following evening.

Dean is a Neah Bay resident and borrowed the family’s car to go to Port Angeles but didn’t make it there. His car was found in a ditch in the snow along Highway 112 near milepost 26 on the evening of Jan. 14.
A person passing by spotted the vehicle and saw footprints along the highway leading away from the vehicle back towards Neah Bay, sheriff officials said.

Sheriff’s Office seeks info on missing Neah Bay man

The family of 38-year-old Mathew Dean says he borrowed a family member’s car in order to go to Port Angeles.
Tuesday evening the family received a Facebook message saying the vehicle Dean had been driving was in the ditch along Highway 112 near mile post 26, about 10 miles southeast of Clallam Bay.

The person who located the vehicle saw foot tracks along the highway leading west-bound away from the vehicle and back towards Neah Bay.
The vehicle appeared to have driven off the roadway and into the ditch
during Tuesday’s heavy snow fall.

Although the footprints are heading towards Neah Bay (westward), it would have been a long walk home--about 30 miles (70.5 miles would be the distance if Matthew had made it to Port Angeles):

initially i thought he could have fallen in the water but I don't think the highway was that close to the sea so now I doubt it (plus the water was probably iced over, right?). This highway is surrounded by a heavy forest so I'll be surprised if he didn't try to walk back and pass away due to exposure :( (though I don't know why he wouldn't walk along the road). There are some buildings along the road but I'm guessing they've already checked the sheds/abandoned houses in the area.

It’s a pretty remote part of the state too by the look at the map. I wonder if anyone’s gone missing around this area before? This one is perplexing. His footprints appeared to be going in the direction Neah Bay and do we know if they were only ever tracked near his car or if they were seen on WA-112 anywhere else? The water and recent heavy snow that night are very concerning.

Heavy snowfall makes me think hypothermia. I think someone posted in another thread that many hypothermia victims go toward water...
