This article explains why it is Mr. Thrasher was in Longview - definitely not a direct route from Spokane to Tacoma. I am a little confused on the dates. Also noting that Longview is 5 miles from the border of Oregon.

It sounds to me like this was more a crime of opportunity, since his original plan didn't include a stop in Longview, so no one outside of his family and friends would've known about the detour.

The Lewis & Clark Motor Inn seems to still be there. What was that area like in 1981? Even today it looks pretty empty—and I imagine even more so at night.

We discussed Robert a few years ago with regards to the KY connection. After reading that article though I don’t think he’d be found in KY.

They didn't believe he stole the car, but I wonder if they reported it stolen at the time? I've heard of that being done in other cases to find the person?
He would have crossed the Cowlitz river.. in a little more than half the solved cases i've seen of people missing with vehicles, they're found less than 5 miles from their last known location. Cant find anything about them searching water..
