KITSAP COUNTY, Wash. - A Missing Indigenous Person Alert has been issued for a woman last seen in "distress" on the Kitsap Peninsula.

Washington State Patrol said 39-year-old Running Hawk, who also goes by Kristle Renea, was last seen barefoot, crying loudly for help on SR 305, near Port Madison Indian Reservation - Suquamish.

Troopers say she appeared in "distress" and got into a late 90s model green Dodge pickup truck. The driver was a bald man with flat, facial features and a mustache.

The license plate for the vehicle was WA C701733Z

Running Hawk is 5'02" and weighs around 125 pounds. She has black hair.

She was last seen on Sunday, Aug. 28 at 6:30 p.m.

If you've seen her, call 911.

A Missing Indigenous Person Alert

Serious question. All due respect, why is it necessary to have a separate and different alert for indigenous persons? Wouldn't a generic missing person alert suffice for all missing persons, or at least all adults? Are there different requirements or procedures on an alert for an indigenous person?

Tribal police are a separate entity then “normal” LE. so yes.

A quick Google provided these articles and more…

Washington Gov. Jay Inslee on Thursday signed into law a bill that creates a first-in-the-nation statewide alert system for missing Indigenous people.

The law creates a system similar to Amber Alerts and so-called silver alerts, which are used respectively for missing children and vulnerable adults in many states.

The system will notify law enforcement when there's a report of a missing Indigenous person. It will also place messages on highway reader boards and on the radio and social media, and will provide information to the news media.

The law attempts to address a crisis of missing Indigenous people — particularly women — in Washington and across the United States.

This is a wonderful outcome. So many indigenous women (and men) are never seen again. I would like to think that the Missing Indigenous Person Alert (MIPA) issued by the WA State Police had something to do with it. Although tribal police have often handled these cases, the MIPA will get more attention. I hope other states adopt this idea.
