There's not a NamUs profile for this John Doe.

I’m curious as to how they’d know this:

Worn brown Bible that had been donated to a homeless shelter or prison ministry in Alabama, marked "Daniel Lyles 02-18-60" and the date "10-26-94" hand-written inside.

Yeah, that would be good to know. Maybe a "compliments of..." sticker or stamp?

Oh no, I think they closed the request

Oh no, I think they closed the request

Sure enough. That's bizarre. The reason they gave for closing the request is: "I have checked with our Records Unit, Homicide/Assault Unit, and SPD's Cold Case Unit and they were unable to locate any records based on the information you provided, and therefore we are in need of more information such as (involved parties) in order to facilitate an additional search for records."

So they claim they can't find any information at all on this man, even when the original request included a lot of detail as well as a link to King County's own webpage about unidentified individuals with this man listed.

As an Archivist/Records Manager, I can tell you exactly what happened. They are drowning in requests (not necessarily records requests) so they are pushing them back endlessly until a higher-up decides they have to clear them.

They are sending out the same message to everyone asking for more details and only the ones that reply back are answered. Everything else is closed.

Boom, just reduced the open requests / workload by 60%. Plus, the "successfully closed" statistics go way up within a month. Probably in time for either a report for upstairs or a budget meeting.

It's bad management, bad practice and I despise it.

Thank you for the insight. That's so frustrating. :(

In My heritage there is this

Daniel Lyles
FamilySearch Stamboom
  • birth 18 feb 1960
  • Died 26 okt 1994
That would fit with the dates in the bible, but I guess anybody could have entered it. I don't have a clue why people feel the need to do that without records back up. There is no social security death record or death date in the USA public records. Kind of strange.

BTW I'm totally not sure this name will ever be a lead to the identification of this man. If the bible was donated John Doe might have gotten it anywhere, but maybe he spend time in Alabama once or was incarcerated for a while.

Found this regarding the name (the date is likely misread, happens with 5s and 8s). If it's correct in saying he was present in 1998, then the original owner of the book isn't the John Doe.
