What do you do when you know people are being killed, but nobody will believe you?
Because the people being killed are the ones society least cares about, the homeless.
Not just any homeless, the ones who get checks such as disability or social security benefits.
A group of criminals in the High Desert area of Los Angeles County are doing just that. They look for loners, those with few friends or family ties, those who get their monthly checks and sit alone in a motel room for a week or so, then the men kidnap them, get control over their income, which since direct deposit is the norm now means just getting their ATM card and pin number, then they kill them and dispose of body, which cant be too hard in an area surrounded by desert.
The criminals are careful and patient, sometimes waiting months to find the right victim, befriending hotel workers and other homeless, breaking into unoccupied houses, pretending to own it and placing an ad on craigslist "Looking to rent room to someone on SSI" (<this is the one I fell for, an ad like that is a magnet for homeless people who get a check and are looking to get off the streets) and they probably have other tricks I am unaware of.
And the beauty of it is, if you escape them as I did, the police wont believe you. I was just another crazy homeless person at the sheriff station with a crazy story.
