I'm not a good person to ask as I feel sympathy for both woman. Perhaps because the woman in this thread survived and the woman in the other thread took her own life.
that is what i think. criminals claim to be mentally ill all the time. for me it makes me less likely to believe someone is mentally ill without some proof.

in this case we have a woman that killed her child then claimed voices. for me to feel confident she was mentally ill i would want proof of a imbalance before the murder.

in the other thread she killed herself. for me that is proof of at least a deep depression.

there are evil women that will kill their children because they are just tired of them then claim mental illness. just as not all mentally ill mothers harm their children, not all mothers that kill and claim voices are actually hearing them.

I do agree with this. As far as the case we are discussing goes, I would need more information before I could form an opinion as to this woman's mental status.

Thiel heard these voices in her dreams. She wasn't sure why she suffocated her son. "Little Boy. Do The Job". That's what the voices in her dreams told her. I wonder if anyone else knew she was having these dreams or if she showed any symptoms of any type of mental illness. I guess if you hear a voice in your dreams and act on it then it's an actual audible hallucination? This is just so sad all around. Also for her daughter.http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?S=8281596&nav=51s6

I would have interpreted "Little Boy. Do the Job" as "get off your butt and raise your son right." But that's just me.

If you hear a voice in your dreams, aren't you just dreaming?

I have something to share that might be slightly related. My daughter has always told me she had dreams with death and blood and violence in them. I never believed her because, well, whenever you are going to be stabbed in your dream you WAKE UP... I believe her now that she has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder and read up on it. Bipolar disorder people can sometimes have these dreams, but where we would normally wake up, they do not and the gore continues. I'm not saying this woman has bipolar disorder, but I am saying some kind of imbalance can truely cause someone to dream pretty nasty dreams.

I can't fathom how you can hurt your child, but my daughter has nearly injured our pet bird (whom she loves dearly) in a "rage" from bipoloar, so perhaps there is something to it.

I still don't comprehend it, though, totally.

From December 2008:

A Neenah mother who suffocated her toddler at the prompting of a voice in her head could spend the rest of her life in a mental health institution.

Brenda M. Thiel, 28, was found not guilty by reason of mental disease or defect Tuesday in the May homicide of her 2-year-old son, Caleb...

She pleaded no contest during a hearing in November. Tuesday's trial was held solely to determine whether Thiel knew what she did was wrong.
