Daniel Bartelt enters dual plea to multiple charges

Bartelt faces four felony counts in connection in all — one count of first-degree intentional homicide for the death of Jessie Blodgett. Blodgett, 19, was found dead in her home on Monday, July 15th.

The other three charges are related to an alleged attack at a Richfield Park on July 12th. Those three charges include one count of attempted first-degree intentional homicide, one count of first-degree recklessly endangering safety, and one count of false imprisonment.

Shocking details were revealed in a Washington County courtroom Thursday. A young musician, strangled to death in her Hartford home, was also sexually assaulted.

Jessie Blodgett's parents walked out of court at one point, the testimony was simply too much to take. A detective took the stand. He talked about Daniel Bartelt, the 20-year-old man accused of killing their daughter...

“There were a number of times, as he was speaking about Jessie that he appeared he was gulping and making sniffling noises as if he was crying. I noted that I did not see him shed a tear," said Thickens.

Citing a host of aggravating factors in the case, a judge on Tuesday sentenced Daniel J.H. Bartelt of Richfield to life in prison without any chance of release for the 2013 rape and strangulation of Jessie Blodgett, 19, in her bedroom at her parents' home...

Prosecutors said the truth was that Bartelt researched and planned his crime with careful premeditation, knowing his friend would be alone at home, sleeping in late after the "Fiddler on the Roof" cast party the night before. And that he killed Blodgett in a slow, deliberate and intimate way, to maximize her suffering both mentally and physically, to demean and shame her.

And after her mother found Jessie dead hours later, Bartelt joined family and friends at her home in the following days to grieve.

Jessie Blodgett died of strangulation​

In July 2013, the local police received a frantic 911 call from Joy Blodgett, Jessie's mother, who told operators that she had found her daughter unresponsive in bed. When police arrived at the victim's home on Wayside Drive, they found the body of 19-year-old Jessie Blodgett on the bedroom floor, where her mother had placed her to perform CPR. Investigators discovered that her body had been washed.

Jessie was a member of a youth theater community in Hartford, Wisconsin. In July 2013, she had just finished a premiere production of Fiddler on the Roof and went to a friend’s home to celebrate.

The next day, around noon, Jessie's mother found her dead in her bed. Jessie's mother told the police that she had seen her asleep in bed before she left for work that morning. When she returned home during lunch to check on her daughter, Joy found her dead in bed with marks on her neck. Jessie was pronounced dead at the scene, and an autopsy determined that she had died of strangulation.
