RACINE — The Racine County Sheriff’s Office responded to Sam Myers Park on the Lake Michigan shoreline on Sunday afternoon after a body was discovered on the beach.

Racine County Medical Examiner Michael Payne said early Sunday evening that the body was that of a middle-aged white male, and had likely not been on the beach or in the water for more than a few days.

The cause of the man’s death is not yet known, Payne said.
“We are sending him up for an autopsy," he said. "Facial-wise we won’t be able to identify him, but fingerprints may give us a possible lead. We want to get this guy identified and back to his family."

The body of Christopher J. Melik, 48, of Waupaca, was recovered from Lake Michigan at about 2:10 p.m. Sunday. Sheriff's officials said Monday that the investigation is ongoing, but it is not believed that Melik’s death is suspicious in nature.
