Winter Storm Orko: Blizzard Conditions Possible in the Plains

Winter Storm Orko is now delivering a swath of heavy snow and strong winds to the northern Plains and Upper Midwest. The southern end of the storm system associated with Orko will have the potential to bring severe thunderstorms and heavy rain to parts of the South. For details on those threats, click here.

Snow, High Winds for the Northern Plains/Upper Midwest

We expect Orko to dump snow totals of 6 to 12 inches, with local amounts over one foot, from portions of northern Nebraska to eastern South Dakota, eastern North Dakota, northern and central Minnesota, far northwest Wisconsin, and the western Upper Peninsula of Michigan.

Gusty winds will accompany the snow and reduce visibility, resulting in possible blizzard conditions at times. As a result, travel will be dangerous Sunday and early Monday on these stretches of interstates:
•Parts of I-80 in western Nebraska
•I-90 in South Dakota
•I-94 in eastern North Dakota into Minnesota
•I-29 in the eastern Dakotas.

Officials closed stretches of I-90 and I-29 in South Dakota during the day Sunday.

Significant storm damage in Hattiesburg, Miss.

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — Emergency officials say an apparent tornado has caused significant damage in Hattiesburg, Miss., after passing along a main road.

Forrest County Fire Coordinator Chip Brown says there is major damage in Hattiesburg and Petal, including on the campus of the University of Southern Mississippi. He couldn't confirm injuries.............

National Weather Service meteorologist Joanne Culin says there have also been reports of injuries in Marion County.

Ct is expected to have a wintery mix over-nite changing to heavy rain sometime tomorrow and through out the day. This will make plowing the roads and driveways even more difficult as the snow will become very very heavy. Temperatures look like they will be milder this week...a good thing.

Well, DS school FINALLY sent out the "no school" message. It is gonna become nasty here tomorrow. There's nowhere to put the snow. Please God, no more snow!

Homes wrecked, dozens hurt in Mississippi tornado

HATTIESBURG, Miss. (AP) — Residents shaken by a tornado that mangled homes in Mississippi were waking up Monday to a day of removing trees, patching roofs and giving thanks for their survival. More than 60 in the state were injured.

Daylight also offered emergency management officials the chance to get a better handle on the damage that stretched across several counties. Gov. Phil Bryant planned visited Hattiesburg, where a twister moved along one of the city's main streets and damaged buildings at the governor's alma mater, the University of Southern Mississippi.

More than 60 people were treated for injuries, and 200 homes and mobile homes were damaged or destroyed, Bryant said at a news conference Monday. However, no lives were lost and no one was unaccounted for. Bryant and other officials said that was in part because tornado sirens gave people as much as 30 minutes of warning that a tornado was approaching.

Also, the University of Southern Mississippi was on Mardi Gras holiday, so there were fewer students on campus. Businesses were either closed or not very crowded because it was Sunday............
