Woman Paralyzed After Eating Nacho Cheese from Gas Station

  • #21
One person has now died from this botulism outbreak connected to gas station cheese sauce. (I wonder if this is the same stuff they sell at movie concessions too.)

Also read that botulism is more likely in foods being kept warm for long periods of time. Could be the warming device was faulty and wasn't keeping the sauce hot enough.

I hope the woman pulls through! It sounds like she is very ill.

Apparently they aren't always washed and also are touched a lot during and after cutting. I forget where I heard that years ago, but it grossed me out enough to remember. They're like the grossest thing you wouldn't suspect kinda thing.

I have worked in restaurants, and I won't even drink my water if it is served with a lemon in it. I ask for a new one without lemon.

A local article. I will probably never eat nacho cheese again 🤢

Wisconsin company distributed nacho cheese linked to fatal botulism

"GERMANTOWN, Wis. - A Wisconsin company has been linked to the fatal botulism outbreak from nacho cheese sauce in California.

Gehl Foods in Germantown says that they are working closely with federal, state and local health authorities to determine what caused the outbreak."

Ugh. I always ask for lemon in my water. Maybe I should bring my own.

I wonder what kind of food? Ugh.

I need info on this as where I live sometimes has no lettuce cuz it has been rained out. Restaurants have it though so we eat out a couple of times a week.

My neighbors invite us for meals and they serve food that has been sitting out in the heat, I wonder what is safe to eat? Ugh

So it was not the gas station's fault if the cheese came to them with botulism. From what I understand, once spores have been produced, they can't be killed by simply being heated up or cooled down. I love nacho cheese, too.... it's my favorite

Ten cases of botulism -- a nerve-paralyzing illness caused by toxins -- are now linked to Valley Oak Food and Fuel after tainted nacho cheese sickened customers, according to the California Department of Public Health. An attorney suing the manufacturer of the cheese told KTXL that two of the people who contracted botulism are teenagers.

Snip from the manufacturer's statement:
"Gehl’s facilities remain safe for food production and all of our food samples continue to test negative for any contaminants. There is no recall of Gehl's nacho cheese product."

I never want to buy any thick substance that is squeezed out of a machine.

Ye Gods. There's the problem right there. If it can't be sliced, grated or crumbled it's not cheese.

I stopped buying any nachos sold at concessions and other places when I worked at the local Rec center. They put a bag of cheese in the heating machine/ dispenser and there it stayed in the hot machine for weeks or even months. However long it took for the bag to be used up. In my two years there none of these machines were ever cleaned in any way. Yet they consistently received high health scores. How I'll never know.

agreed,

makes me wonder how "Kraft macaroni and cheese" can say "cheese" on the box,

there is literally no "cheese" in the box...the so called "cheese" is a package full of chemicals which contains zero "cheese"
