Prosecutors have charged a Kansas City man with forcing a cell phone down his ex-girlfriend's throat last week, requiring emergency surgery to remove it.
Marlon Brandon Gill, 23, was charged Tuesday with first-degree assault, a felony, in the case that initially was considered a watercooler joke when it was reported that the woman, Melinda Abell, had swallowed the cell phone herself during an argument with her boyfriend.

That gal is really lucky that the ex-boyfriend even called 911. She would have died if he hadn't or it seems so anyway. What a terrible thing to happen to someone. Sounds like he really has his butt in a sling now. Probably the last time he does that to someone.

According to court documents, Melinda Abell told detectives that Gill, her ex-boyfriend, had forced her into a car and demanded to see her cell phone. They were stopped in a parking lot, and Abell said Gill grabbed her by the mouth, held it open and shoved the phone down her throat until it became lodged. Surgeons had to remove it.

Police initially issued a statement saying she had swallowed the phone. A spokesman now explains that investigators weren't able to talk to her until after the surgery.

Police are searching for Gill. He is 5 feet 9 inches and 180 pounds. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call the TIPS Hotline at (816) 474-8477.

Jackson County prosecutors charged a Kansas City man Tuesday in connection with a Dec. 23 cell-phone assault on a Blue Springs woman.
Marlon Brando Gill, 23, was charged in a warrant with first-degree felony assault. In a probable cause statement, Blue Springs police said that the 24-year-old victim told an officer that Gill forced a cell phone partly down her throat early Friday.
Doctors performed emergency surgery to remove the phone, and the woman remained hospitalized Tuesday. Her father has said he expects her to recover.
Police were seeking Gill, who has been living in an apartment in the 10600 block of East 43rd Street.
Court records show that on Tuesday the victim filed a petition for an order of protection against Gill. A court hearing on the request is scheduled for next Tuesday.
Other court records show that Gill was convicted of misdemeanor battery against the same woman in October in Johnson County. He was sentenced to 60 days in jail, but the sentence was suspended for 12 months. He was ordered to pay $100 to attend a domestic violence program. The attorney who represented Gill in the Johnson County case could not be reached Tuesday.
