A Russian woman purported to be the world's oldest person has celebrated her '129th birthday' - but she wishes she had died young.

Koku Istambulova says she has never lived a happy day in her life and she has no idea how she has lived so long that she has outlasted her children.

Other centenarians have credited a healthy diet or a lifetime of exercise for their longevity.

But Koku says "it was God's will" in her case - and she considers it "punishment" instead of a gift.

Russian officials believe Koku is 129-years-old, which would make her the oldest person in the world.

It is very sad this poor lady feels this way.

It makes me wonder if she always felt that way or maybe it is because she is older and feels that she is no longer able to do all the things she used to do

I wondered that too. My Grandmother died when she was 91 and though she had lived a happy life her health was not great and she said you can live too long and that she was ready to go.

I'm pretty sure this 129 year old will have her wish granted.

I hope she finds some true happiness in her life before she dies.

My grandmother was perpetually unhappy and ornery most of her life. She had an extremely rough, traumatic childhood that she never spoke of and we only learned more about after she passed. But when it was time, she did, finally, know (accept?) that we loved her and that her life wasn’t in vain. She raise some good kids who had good grandkids and great-grandkids, and she built a strong family legacy.

I hope Koku can truly know her life had purpose and meaning before she dies. ❤️

I am glad your Grandmother knew how much she was loved before she passed.

I have a friend in Russia and it is a third world country in a lot of respects and unless you are in the minority and obscenely wealthy life can be very hard and difficult. This poor lady could have had a very difficult life barely surviving on little income.

Wow! She was born in 1889? She has certainly lived through a few hells on Earth. Russia, WWI, WWII, Lenin, Stalin, all combined with the horrible living conditions of most Russians then and now. She has buried her husband, all of her children, probably many of her grand children and outlived every friend she ever had.

She "never had a happy day in her life". How utterly sad. Her life must have been very hard and full of sorrow. I feel so sad now that I have read this story.

I only wish for her to have one happy moment on this Earth before she goes on her next adventure. We aren't here to be miserable.
