Charleston Police Officer Shot and Killed During Chase

A very sad day in WV.

Charleston Police Chief Brent Webster tells WSAZ.com 27-year-old Patrolman Jerry Jones was the officer killed in the line of duty Sunday.

It has been twenty eight years since a Charleston officer was shot and killed.

UPDATE: Charleston Mayor: Every Reason to Believe Friendly Fire Killed City Patrolman

"... police can't prove it at this point, but they believe the shot that killed Patrolman Jones came from one of the city's officers. Mayor Jones says they are not sure which gun the bullet came from, but police believe the suspect during the chase was "armed with a two-ton vehicle" and not a gun. Patrolman Jones was wearing a bullet proof vest when he was shot, but was hit just above it.

"Five police officers have been placed on paid leave, while the investigation into the shooting takes place. There were four officers at the scene, including Patrolman Jones, at the time of the incident."
