Circumstances of Recovery: 3 story apartment building on fire

[...]
The "badly burned human remains" of a person were discovered during a search of the debris of the partially collapsed building hours after firefighters had brought the fire under control and were ready to leave the scene, police said.
[...]
Through the subsequent investigation, police learned that Church and both Jarvis men went to the apartment intending to steal money and drugs that they believed were there," as well as carry out "retaliation for an earlier incident involving two females who were staying at the residence."

In the criminal complaints, police said an apparent fight ensued between the victim and the three other men, at which time the victim was allegedly "beaten, struck, and stabbed with a knife by the defendants" just prior to them setting fire to the building.

"It's been nearly five years since 44-year-old John Jackson was brutally murdered and set on fire inside an apartment in Williamson. During all of this time, his family has not been able to lay him to rest as they have been waiting for his remains to be released from the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Charleston.

This case has already netted three convictions and sentences, but despite efforts from the family and investigators, the remains could not be released from the office until he was positively identified, which just happened last Thursday [May 8 2025]."

Another NamUs file (which is still active for some reason) where the fact that authorities basically already knew who the person was wasn't mentioned at all.
There was another case like this out of WV, also involving burned remains, where the person had a funeral and I think was also buried within two days of being found in early 2024, but the NamUs file only was archived in 2025.
I often see people taking NamUs and other databases at 100% face value (and I often do it myself), and I'm starting to realize that it's really not advisable to do that.
