WV Yeager Airport Hazmat situation

10:08 p.m. - A 13 News photographer at the scene says a passenger on the plane says some sort of gas went off in the planes cargo area.

10:14 p.m. - According to a tweet from Yeager Airport, they are making provisions for people on other incoming flights to claim baggage at an outdoor location.


Airport Road and all terminals are closed to the public.

Bag not on plane but had been left in the terminal.

10:32 p.m. - According to Richard Atkinson, Yeager Airport Director, says that the bag containing the chemical was not on a plane but had been left unattended in the terminal for some time.

According to Adkinson, when airport employees checked the bag, the chemical was released. Two of the employees drove themselves to a local hospital while two others were being treated at the scene by HAZMAT teams.


National Guard HAZMAT, Charleston HAZMAT and the Charleston bomb squad have all responded at Yeager.


According to Adkinson, airport security is reviewing surveillance video.


No more flights are expected to leave Yeager tonight and all incoming passengers are required to leave their name and contact number.
