This murder has long set in my mind and heart and yet, new to sleuthing, I don't even know how to go about researching information as I can't seem to find anything online. Here are the details I have and perhaps someone knows if the case has ever been investigated.
Born in Yuba City, CA, I was still living there when in 1984 and expecting my 3rd child, I was remotely involved in a murder investigation. There is an area near the river that is a popular site for young people to go on a Friday or Saturday night to meet up and party. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, my young brother-in-law would ride his bike down and collect aluminum cans to turn into cash.
One day he returns and tells me he found a bike down there and asked what he should do. He and his brothers were always collecting junk bikes to build better ones. I told him that it must belong to someone, but to keep his eye on it and if it was still there the following weekend, then maybe it was dumped (unfortunately, this area gets used for dumping trash and unwanted items).
The following week it was still there. He asked a neighbor for a ride to pick it up, and brought it home. It was old, not in great shape but it had bread bags over the seat and handle bars as if someone was protecting the material from weather damage. This was sometime between March-June 1984. He put it out with a handful of other bikes he had and planned on using it for parts.
A few days later, I was reading the local paper, The Appeal-Democrat, and I saw an article about a missing woman. The one detail that made me feel as if I were punched in the stomach... was the description of her bicycle. It had bread wrappers over the seat and handlebars. My bil was in school at the time, so I immediately called the police. They sent an officer out to collect the bike and then went to pick up my bil from his high school. At this point the interrogated him for over 2 hours, asking him some... pretty strange questions, but I understand they had to consider him a person of interest at that point. At that time, his memory of the details was seeing two separate pickup trucks in the area. One was green and I think the other may have been white. They were not close enough for him to see who was in the vehicles.
The police searched the area that my bil took them to, but found nothing. Soon after this, an older lady came to our home and at first, I thought it was someone from a church outreach, but soon found that it was this young woman's mother. She had flown out from the Midwest I believe, looking for her missing daughter. She asked what we knew about the area that the bike was found and we told her. She told us something about her daughter having some mental or developmental issues if I remember right.
We heard nothing else for approximately 9 months (this is memory as I cannot find details) when they discovered a woman's body only 30 yards from where the bicycle had been found. It was under a mattress and she had been shot. They said because of the condition of the body, they couldn't determine if she had been sexually assaulted.
After this, life went on and I never heard any more about the case or the investigation. I cannot remember the young woman's name or find details on the case. I have thought about this woman so often throughout my life. I know there were a couple of CA serial killers that may have had connections to our area around that time, but also, if she was down there alone, or even to meet up with someone, that would be a dangerous isolated area, where no one would hear you calling for help.
So, if anyone knows, remembers, or can find information on this case, I would be very interested in learning how to investigate this case. If it was ever solved, I didn't hear about it. Thank you.
