This John Doe isn't on Andrew's rule out/exclusion list - the John Doe also has no exclusions/rule outs listed

He was found in San Francisco on Dec 30, 1976 - 22 days after Andrew went missing. If he was actually hitchhiking something bad could have happened, and dumped into the San Francisco Bay or could have committed suicide.

This also stood out to me:

Head Hair Description
Described as a dark brown and relatively long - Andrew had long hair when he went missing.
Height5' 11"(71 inches) , Measured - Andrew is listed as being 5'11
Weight132 lbs, Measured - Andrew is listed as being 145lbs - slightly off

I am going to submit this.

Ordinarily I wouldn't consider suicide in a hitchhiking case, but the fact that Andrew took a gun with him stood out to me. I guess he could've taken it for protection, but it's my understanding that hitchhiking was common in the '70s. Out of all the hitchhiking cases I've read on here, this is the first I've seen that mentions the hitchhiker taking a weapon. Additionally, Andrew "may suffer from mental illness," so I think suicide unfortunately is a possibility.

There were multiple serial killers targeting hitchhikers during that era. Police were advising people not to hitchhike. Its entirely possible he brought it for self defense

We also don't know Andy WAS hitchhiking, only that he told his mother he planned to.
I suspect suicide as well, maybe he'd rather have his mother think he ran away than killed himself. A .357 is pretty serious, whose was it and how long had it been in the house (if that's where he took it from)? chaddylex's Doe fits, if Andy were wandering SF for weeks before he killed himself it's possible he lost weight, and always possible either estimate is off.

The description header says he is missing from San Francisco, but I couldn't find any mention of San Francisco? He was missing from Redding and presumably headed to Sacramento? Have I missed something about San Francisco?
His case sounds like a possible suicide, perhaps in the Redding area. I feel this is made more likely by the fact he had a hefty gun and that somewhat reduced the chances of an abduction or murder to me. Also his mental illness.
