Pennsylvania - Coronavirus COVID-19

Pennsylvania Extends Coronavirus School, Business Closures Indefinitely
The state's stay-at-home order was also pushed back to April 30 affecting more than 10.1 million Pennsylvanians

Schools and businesses in Pennsylvania will remain closed until further notice because of the coronavirus pandemic, the state's governor said on Monday.

"Our business and school closures will no longer have a set date to resume normal operations," Democratic Gov. Tom Wolf said at a news conference from Harrisburg.

Pennsylvania leaders had been making decisions about the closure of non-life-sustaining businesses and schools on a two week basis, Wolf said.

Confirmed COVID-19 infections swelled to 4,152 cases with 50 deaths as of Monday. Wolf said the continued growth warranted the indefinite extension.

"We're going to keep our schools and businesses closed as long as we need to keep them closed to keep Pennsylvania safe," he said.

Wolf also pushed back his stay-at-home order for Pennsylvanians living in 26 counties to April 30 bringing state guidance in line with federal government recommendations issued Sunday. More than 10.1 million of the state's 12.8 million residents fall under the order.

Carbon, Cumberland and Dauphin counties were added to the stay-at-home order on Monday. They join: Allegheny, Beaver, Berks, Bucks, Butler, Centre, Chester, Delaware, Erie, Lackawanna, Lancaster, Lehigh, Luzerne, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, Pike, Schuylkill, Washington, Wayne, Westmoreland and York counties.

The stay-at-home order only permits residents to leave home for life-sustaining reasons like grocery shopping, picking up prescriptions, tending to a family member or visiting a hospital for emergency care. They may also take short walks or runs outside for exercise, but must adhere to social distancing guidelines.

The coronavirus response expansion comes a day after Wolf asked President Donald Trump to declare a disaster in the state.

Monday night, Trump approved the declaration, meaning additional federal funding and support will be available to Pennsylvania as the coronavirus battle continues.

Hundreds could be released from Pa. state prisons under draft plans to help prevent a coronavirus outbreak.

"
HARRISBURG — Gov. Tom Wolf’s administration is drafting legislation that would provide for the release of a small number of state prison inmates, part of expanding efforts to prevent a deadly coronavirus outbreak within the system.

A source familiar with the discussions said Tuesday that the number of inmates eligible for release under the proposal remains fluid, but that it could range from 500 to 3,000 of the approximately 45,000 inmates."

No More Mr. Nice Mayor: Jim Kenney, Shut This City Down
Many Philadelphians are ignoring polite calls for social distancing, even as COVID-19 cases now surpass 1,000 in the city. Drastic times call for drastic measures.

No More Mr. Nice Mayor: Jim Kenney, Shut This City Down

"As of Monday, Philadelphia had officially surpassed 1,000 cases of COVID-19, with positive tests in every zip code in the city. Heading into April, the need to buckle down and gear up for the worst couldn’t be more obvious. Experts are already predicting that Philly isn’t even close to the peak of this devastating pandemic, saying that May is when the coronavirus crisis will hit its peak here."

Philadelphia Ends 'Time and a Half' Coronavirus Pay Policy for City Workers

Philadelphia Ends Time-and-a-Half Coronavirus Pay Policy for City Workers
About half of Philadelphia's 30,000 public employees received an extra 50% for time worked during the first two weeks of the coronavirus outbreak.

"
Thousands of Philadelphia city workers deemed essential are no longer earning pay at a rate of 150% per hour after Mayor Jim Kenney ended a policy put in place at the onset of the coronavirus outbreak.

Thousands of police officers, firefighters, sanitation workers and health care workers earned extra pay from March 18-29 for remaining in the field for their jobs. Other city employees, who were also deemed essential but able to work from home, also received time-and-a-half pay through an order approved by Kenney"

Just checking in from Pittsburgh PA, in Allegheny County in case people don't now. A guy who traveled to Utah on a ski trip came back sick, tested positive for Covid-19 and subsequently two other people from my office got sick but were not tested. I think one definitely got it and now his wife is sick.

A huge line of cars gathered as people tried to get help from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank .

Officials with the food bank also asked that people discontinue traditional food drives until further notice due to the coronavirus. Food bank officials said it cuts down on people coming through the door and allows employees to spend time packing food boxes and sorting bulk produce.

Here is their Facebook page, if you're interested. They've conducted a few live stream meetings for the public via their FB page.
