OR - Portland law enforcement investigating 15 police cars that caught on fire at training division, 2 May 2024

Fires that broke out overnight at the training facility were not the first suspected arson incidents on government property in Portland this year. In January, police announced that an arson investigation was underway after a series of blazes burned equipment owned by the city, including a forklift, an excavator and a bulldozer. They said at the time that evidence gathered at the scene "suggested the fires that damaged the equipment were intentionally set."

Portland police are investigating a social media post claiming responsibility for an arson fire last week that burned 17 Police Bureau cars.

Police originally said 15 cars were burned in the fire last Thursday but increased that number by two Monday as their investigation continues.

After a group claimed responsibility on Monday for setting fire to at least 15 police cars at the Portland Police Bureau’s training facility, Portland officials along with the FBI and U.S. Attorney’s Office spoke Wednesday about last week’s protest-related vandalism in the city.

The group is called “Rachel Corrie’s Ghost Brigade” and they claim that they set fire to the police cars because they knew officers were going to sweep the Portland State University library to clear out pro-Palestinian protesters who were occupying the building, KPTV reports.
