UNSOLVED CA - Hamilton City, Skeletal Leg & Foot in Brahma boot, Sacramento River, Jun'14

Oh wow wonder what happened to that info about it being narrowed down to female and a certain age range... weird that it was published and now considered not valid. I always thought it was odd it was only in one story though.

Anyway yes, if gender and age are now off the table, I think Jason's another possibility (sadly!). I wish they'd come out with more information.

It was a valid story, it was just a two-year-old article about a different case. The remains in the story were later identified as Heidi Ring. Apparently it was moved to the news site's front page because somebody there made the same mistake I did, thinking it was the new remains.

This is the latest about the remains from last week.

Human remains found over the weekend near the shore of the Sacramento River are bones from a lower body extremity, the Glenn County Sheriff's Office stated in a press release this morning (June 24).

Oh! Gotcha. Thank you. I was so confused. I kept finding the stories about Heidi Ring and even then I still thought the other story was new.

I wonder how long before they come out with more information about the ones that were just found recently.

It took them several months to do DNA and match Heidi up to her remains, I too wonder how long it could take to identify lower extremity bones. It seems identity is pretty wide open right now as to male, female, adult, child, timeline and area missing from. Where does the Sacramento River flow from? Could these remains have been dumped miles up river and travelled down river over many years?

This is quite near Chico, home of Chico State University. Are there any students or locals missing? One popped up from last September on a google search, but he's been located.

The remains could also be an undocumented migrant farmworker, who might not be reported missing.

Here is more than you want to know about the Sacramento River.

The human remains are those of a tibia and fibula of a human right leg, still attached to the ankle and a booted foot. The man was wearing Brahma brand, men's size 9.5, Jones said...

Jones said the label inside the man's boot is printed with "Alpha," "ASTMF2413-05" and "2590418" stamped on the boot tongue. Detectives and the boot manufacturer are now attempting to trace those numbers in an effort to learn where the boot may have been sold, he said.

The bones were examined by forensic pathologist Dr. Thomas K. Resk, which was attended by officers of the Glenn County Sheriff's Major Crimes Unit. The remains are currently in the possession of the Chico State University Human Identification Laboratory, which is trying to extract DNA samples to run against DNA databases.

The ASTM number is showing the standards it meets. I think this is maybe a steel toe-cap work boot.

I wonder if they are assuming male solely based on men's size 9.5 shoe? My step daughters both have big feet and wear 9.5 or 10 in men's shoes.

If it's the real Brahma and not a knockoff, they're a Colombian company that doesn't distribute directly in the US or Canada. But K-Mart carries a line with the same name, very different design.

If you go to the Brahma Boots website, you get this big disclaimer before you can even enter:

BRAHMA IS NOT A REGISTERED TRADEMARK BY OUR COMPANY IN THE UNITED STATES OR CANADA. WE ARE NOT THE MANUFACTURERS OF BRAHMA PRODUCTS DISTRIBUTED OR RETAILED IN THESE COUNTRIES. IF YOU HAVE COMMENTS OR FEEDBACK FOR BRAHMA IN THESE COUNTRIES PLEASE DIRECT YOUR INQUIRIES TO THE PLACE WHERE YOU PURCHASED YOUR FOOTWEAR. BY ENTERING THE SITE YOU ARE ACKNOWLEDGING THIS INFORMATION. THANK YOU.

So apparently they're having some kind of trademark conflict with the US retailers.

Those are the same boots I wear for work. Normally I'm a size 8.5 in women's but I buy these in 6.5/men's. If they determining sex based on boot alone they could be wrong. 9.5 in men's would fit a woman 11.5 size. Many women wear men's work boots solely because very few companies make work boots in women's sizes for a reasonable price.

Yes that Walmart boot is the same brand. I imagine it's next to impossible to track since there are so many walmarts in CA

I've been trying to check missing persons cases in the area and the only one I've found so far was Neal King in Oroville. Somehow I don't think it's him, but I'll be keeping an eye on any new news. I hope this brings answers to someone.

Neal King was last seen wearing "brown hiking boots".

And Ronald Osborne was last seen being swept downstream in the Sacramento River.

Rowdy McMillan's body was also thought to have been thrown in the Sacramento River.

Wow these 3 all seem like definite possibilities. Since the boot/shoe was apparently still intact I'm thinking it was fairly recent. I don't mean a few months ago necessarily, I just mean not 50 years ago or something. I hope they can narrow down when that style of boot was made to help narrow down the range of years.

ETA: or better yet get DNA from the boots... just trying to think of anything to help narrow down a time frame.

Well, I found a little bit of info. The F2413 is for footwear with a protective toe cap (i.e. steel toed). http://www.astm.org/DATABASE.CART/HISTORICAL/F2413-05.htm
This shows "historical" and the newer/currently 'active' standard is F2413-11.

I am guessing the 05 and 11 are years, but can't tell 100% for sure. More than you ever wanted to know (this is another brand, but it's about work boot standards): http://www.grainger.com/content/qt-protective-footwear-standards-252

It doesn't appear that Walmart still sells the "Alpha" Brahma boot. They have a number of that brand but not that style. So I'm wonder if it's an outdated style/standard, and if so, by how much.

Not much new info but here's another story about the boots: http://www.chicoer.com/news/ci_26069364/glenn-county-detectives-using-boot-found-human-remains.

The Glenn County Sheriff's Office has contacted the Shasta and Tehama sheriff's offices to have the remains checked against missing persons cases and remains found "in those upstream counties," but there have been no matches, according to the Glenn County Sheriff's Office. All law enforcement agencies have also been notified.

The part BBM made me do a double take. There have been other remains found upstream? I wonder how sure they are there's no matches between those and this leg/foot.

I sure hope that other number found on the boot helps lead to something.

BBM may just be as easy as verifying that all other bodies found upstream were intact at the time of recovery. I sure hope the can identify soon, and possibly recover the rest of the remains.

I think you're probably right. The young Carbuff who lives in Sacramento tells me a dozen people or more drown in the river every year. Kayaks, rafts, swimmers, hikers who fall in on some of the steep ledges upstream, etc.

Young Carbuff also indicates there were other searches downstream from where the body was found. Obviously this should be taken as rumor.

Oh good point... when they said "remains" I took it as not complete remains, but that certainly may not be the case.

Are there really that many unidentified remains just in that stretch of river? Wow!

I live in Sacramento and I know there are numerous people who drown or are found in the local rivers (and North of here where Hamilton City/Chico etc. area are) but I always thought they were identified pretty quickly. Apparently not always. I hope they can figure out who all of these belong to, to get some closure for the families.
