"It does not look like their perpetrator fits our perpetrator. I'm fairly confident we're not looking for the same person," Slater said.
On July 1, 2005, campers Steven Haugen, 54, and Jeanette Bauman, 56, were shot to death at their campsite. Their dog also was shot and killed. So far, the killer has eluded sheriff's detectives.
The cases are similar in that the victims were slain in rural settings, and in both cases the victims' vehicles were left at the scene, Slater said.
Another trait the two cases share is a seemingly inexplicable motive for the killings. Haugen was a school counselor and Bauman a teacher. The killer or killers took some items, including the victims' license plate, but left behind their sport-utility vehicle.
