Maybe the person knocked first and then kicked in when someone refused to open the door. Would explain why the dad was dead in the doorway. He may have gone to the door, looked outside and refused to open the door.

This case reminds me of the Ashley Freeman, Lauria Bible case out of Oklahoma. The parents were killed and the teenage girls disappeared. It was later determined that the parents were killed due to a disagreement over drugs and the girls were taken and later killed for "fun."
