I'd say yes. They only found a partial skeleton, and back in the day the coroner might not have been as well educated as they are now.

I thought about that as well but I found the ring somehow too plain for a frat and would have rather expected the greek letters... I also thought a school is possible but I can't really come up with some institute that would start with a g. Usually its something like HS or U or C .... edit...
