I don't understand why the perps might have separate trials.
It seems to me a whim of these criminals, not to mention increased costs for the State.

This case makes me REALLY angry

Thank Goodness more people weren't killed, because anybody hit by a rock could have been.

None of them are waiving their rights to a speedy trial so they're going to delay their actual pleas a few days because the earliest they can start trials are June.

Judge Christopher Zenisek ruled that the three defendants will be tried separately in anticipation of not-guilty pleas from the three men in March.

Karol-Chik's trial begins June 7; Kwak's defense will present his case on June 24, and Koenig faces a jury on July 19. Each trial is expected to take at least 8 days.

The three are being held at the Jefferson County Jail on $2 million cash-only bonds.

Two more victims have surfaced in connection with a deadly night of rock-throwing which ended up in the brutal death of a 20-year-old Arvada woman last year, as revealed in a Monday court hearing.

Joseph Koenig, one of three rock-throwing suspects, has been charged with four additional counts — two each of attempted murder and second-degree assault in connection with two additional rock-throwing incidents which prosecutors said happened on Feb. 25, 2023.

Karol-Chik will be the first to stand trial starting with jury selection on June 7. Kwak’s trial is scheduled to begin June 24th and will stagger to fit the July 4 holiday. Koenig will be the final of the three to be tried. His trial scheduled to begin July 19, a Friday, and end around August 1.

• Kwak has been charged with first-degree murder with extreme indifference, six counts of attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference, three counts of second-degree assault (causing injury with a deadly weapon), and three counts of attempted second-degree assault (causing injury with a deadly weapon).
• Karol-Chik has been charged with first-degree murder with extreme indifference, seven counts of attempted first-degree murder with extreme indifference, three counts of second-degree assault (causing injury with a deadly weapon) and four counts of attempted second-degree assault (causing injury with a deadly weapon).

Their trials will happen separately, starting with Karol-Chik's on June 7, then Kwak's starting on June 24, and Koenig's starting on July 19. If convicted, they all face a punishment of life without parole.

Fyi Joseph Koenig has a preliminary hearing today for the additional charges.

It just came out that Karol-Chik did an interview with police a few months back and told them about the additional charges. He also took a polygraph stating Koenig is the one that threw the rock that killed Alexa Bartell.

Have to think he is being offered a plea deal...

Going to keep updating this as I listen:

No deals have been offered yet. He did a proffer Jan 4th.

He took two polygraphs, initial one he did not pass: this is the one he claimed kwak threw the rock.

2nd one with the DAs office: passed, Koenig as rock thrower. Told prosecution he has told his attorneys since the beginning Koenig is the one that threw the rock.
