Australia- Nine people stabbed including 9 month baby @ the Westfield Shopping Centre in Bondi Junction, suspect fatally shot, Sydney, 13 April 2024

Cauchi clearly has an interest in sex, visiting strip clubs and providing escort service on several sites. Leaving me to think that IF these stabbings were gender related, it may have been done out of the frustration of being alone. (Similar to other 'Incel' related crimes) IMO
He did seem to lead a lonely existence. I searched his name on Facebook and it brought up various posts he'd made to groups over the years, and just about every post was him seeking to meet friends through differnt activities; shooting, astronomy photography, computing, surfing.

I guess that's all been wiped now along with his account.

He must have been in terrible state,
both mental and physical.

He looked thin and gaunt
(on cctv),
with legs resembling matchsticks.

That is what happens when meds are allegedly not taken and drugs are consumed.

This is a lifelong treatment disease.

He's from my closest city. He went to my university, the high school he went to is one I attended briefly (not at the same time), and his Facebook was loaded with reviews he'd written for Toowoomba businesses I frequent... some that I have been considered a regular at.
He didn't look familiar in the pictures shown in the news, but then as soon as I saw a younger picture without the beard he definitely did.
I'm sorry that this is not the most selfless post. My heart goes out to the victims, I pray for positive news about the baby girl, and I am in awe of the heroes who ran toward danger. It's just that the feeling that this was almost Grand Central in Toowoomba is unshakeable. I've seen a lot of local posts suggesting that I'm not alone in that thought.

I am on your page.

"Joel Cauchi:

who was the Queensland man who carried out the Bondi Junction mass stabbing?

The NSW police commissioner, Karen Webb, said there would be an investigation for
'many days, and perhaps weeks'
into Cauchi.
Police would work to identify
'the movement of the offender
[on Saturday and in]
the hours,
the days,
the weeks –
his life leading up to yesterday',
Webb told reporters on Sunday.

Webb said whether or not Cauchi
was targeting women would be an
'obvious line of inquiry'.

Webb told reporters Cauchi was known to police in NSW and Queensland.

'He is not known criminally
but he has come to notice of law enforcement in this state and Queensland
for mental health-related issues
',
she said.

Cauchi had never been arrested in Queensland or charged with any criminal offence,
with no record in the courts for a domestic violence order."

Well done to the paparazzi. Seems like a nice way to harass some folks in their 70s coming to terms with an unfathomable loss.

Fair.

But honestly, I feel more sorry for them after reading that article than I did before.

Before, because you cannot really help an adult child with mental issues who does not want help, plus I have also lost a son.

After, because the whole story about dad and the pigeons and how their son would come help with the pigeons... Ugh. Does dad seem a bit off also? Tragic and heart-wrenching from all sides. So many victims here, both living and dead.

Sadness.

Bravo
"All too often I see "mental health struggles" being used as a synonym for drug abuse." - Drives me nuts!!!

Keeping in mind I am certainly not an expert: as far as I know, people with organic, genetic and idiopathic schizophrenia generally don't seek out drugs, especially stimulant and hallucinogenic drugs.

However something like half of schizophrenics abuse drugs.

That seems paradoxical until you remember illegal drug use is strongly linked to inducing psychosis and schizophrenia.

I have two nephews who did and do. Both diagnosed with it and both seek out illegal (and legal) drugs and alcohol because they don't like the way prescribed drugs make them feel and they self-medicate their symptoms. So it does happen.

I believe many turn to drugs to escape the voices in their head etc, to try to escape their reality, often these people are just so tormented.

No excuse but it's what it is IMO

Most lead very normal lives too, those who are well medicated & have appropriate resources & family support etc.

Some know when to reach out for help.

IMO

and sometimes no matter how supportive the family, the disease wins

The 6th deceased victim has been named (they must have finally been able to reach her family, imo).

She is Chinese national Yixuan Cheng.
She was in her early 20s, attending University in Australia. Her parents will be arriving in Australia today. (as per Ch7 TV news)

I would think a schizophrenic indulging in drugs was a time bomb.
Oh, and "sleeping rough" and sharpening knives.

But then,
what do I know?

RIP to innocent victims :(

We have no idea if he was taking medication or not.

We also have no idea if he was using illicit substances.

It will all be in his toxicology results of his autopsy. But we probably won't know till an inquest IMO

I wonder if they will be having an inquest quite quickly. I just heard the NSW Premier say he is freeing up more money for the Coroners Court - in the wake of this tragedy - so they can get to the bottom of what happened and look at what more they can do about mental health.

Unfortunately it’s not that simple. My brother has suffered badly from poor mental health over the past 20+ years. He goes through periods of psychosis where I have called police with concerns about behaviour and usually the response is unless he threatens to harm someone or harms himself they cannot do anything. He has been hospitalised many times but not as many times as he should have been.

It’s alarming when you are dealing with people who are so unwell who can cause such devastation because they’re not right.

Luckily he is on a community order now where he has medication injected but until his behaviour escalated there are long periods of being unmedicated.

I have a brother who also has episodes of schizoprenia and he too has his medication injected. He has had itinerate periods and has travelled up and down the east coast and hails from Toowoomba (snap) and played with knives as a teenager (snap).
He went to the same school as Gerard Baden-Clay and Bruce Lehrmann (who liked the same strip club as Joel (snap)) -- but lives a peaceful existence, shuns shopping malls and is divorced.
Thanks for sharing.

People don't chose to have schizophrenia, but they live with it everyday.

It's horrible to watch them in the midst of a psychosis, they are so tormented & just want it to stop.

I guess my brother didn't get that memo...he used Shrooms and LSD at times because he said he could 'battle' the voices in his head when he was tripping. He was especially out of pocket during those times, imo. We had to have him picked up and taken on 3 days hold when we saw him in that condition. He was erratic and volatile.

But as he grew older and matured he limited his drug usage to his lithium cocktail and some old fashioned weed. Which was not strong like today's pot. But he smoked 3 packs a day and eventually succumbed to throat cancer because he just could not stop smoking. It was like a life line in his mind. He panicked if he could not smoke.

But when I think of this case with a guy using METH and psychedelics---that's scary. Because meth gives someone the urge to be shocking and aggressive and that's not what a schizophrenic needs, IMO.

yep same with my nephews

I fear it's just all talk SA. Its a "hot topic" atm, gotta be seen saying the right things

Mental Health services in this country is woefully pathetic.

People reach out in crisis & get turned away all the time. Eventually they don't ask for help anymore.

You only need to browse the Coronial findings in every state to see how much mental health is represented.

All just my IMO & from my experience.
