DA: Successful in keeping children out of harms way, no shots were fired.
Whew.
That really drove home for me how a lot of the silence surrounding this case was due to LE proceeding extremely carefully knowing the children were still in these people’s custody. They murdered two people to keep them (presumably), who knows how this could have ended had they known how close LE was to arresting them.

I think the children are nowhere near the area now, nor are they in school for now.
When I was in grade school, we got a new girl in class whose mother shot and killed her father. She was sent there to live with her grandmother since her mom was in prison. She had lived in another part of the state - and even without the Internet and 24 hour news availability back then, somehow her story/situation came with her and we all knew.

Exactly. It’s also why the warrants were sealed, and they used a great deal of SWAT resources to affect the arrests.

I’m shocked that they didn’t put the kids in PC. I was hoping they were able to sell it to TA that that would be best for the children right now.
Then I wonder if they tried and she said no.
I don’t know if they bugged the house, but leaving kids there seems to me like such a crazy risk.

This is going to be a lot to spring on the children. At some point they are going to have to tell them mommy is dead. They are going to wonder where gm is. How on earth are they going to tell them she has gone away too? Plus their dad already being gone. That is a lot to process. Everyone leaving them. jmo.

Newsnation now:

They have the affidavits in the case, that have all kinds of new information about the suspects and their actions. Custody battle is linked to the murders.

Grandma was at the heart of it. Wow, we’re going to be learning much more than I imagined. Daughter of the Twombley’s played a major role in blowing this open. Parents weren’t home that morning, had told daughter they were going on a mission. Made her clean up pickup when they returned. Jillian had a firearm in her purse which wasn’t recovered.

Apparently grandma told her son in February that the custody battle won’t be an issue much longer.

Court ordered supervisor was available but Grandma gave her time off and lied about it (sounds like).

Much more but I don’t want to get it wrong.

Scurrying off to Newsnation!
Can always count on you for fast updates :)
I hope that the daughter is in a safe place.

I totally agree- I would’ve thought the kids would’ve been removed “for their own protection with their mother missing with concern for foul play” (as it could have been able to be told to TA).

I think even if there was no [publicly-known] reason to doubt their well-being with TA… the fact that she was LE’s primary suspect from early on would be enough to worry about their safety for me, at least. I’ve certainly seen kids removed, even if just temporarily, for much less.

Since the reason for the exchange was a birthday party ... was the day of the women's deaths on one of the kid's birthdays ??

Two bodies were recovered in rural Oklahoma, a day after four people were charged with murder and kidnapping. Authorities say 27-year-old Veronica Butler and 39-year-old Jilian Kelley, of Hugoton, Kansas, were driving through the Oklahoma panhandle
to pick up Butler’s children for a March 30 birthday party in Kansas.

Red bolding mine.

Like, how could the child whose birthday it was, ever want celebrate it again as it could trigger memories of losing their mom forever ?
Adds another layer of horror to the crime.
Omo.
Daughter’s birthday celebration. Not sure if it was exactly that date, or just the chosen date to celebrate due to scheduled visitation. Instead, her mom was murdered by grandma and “friends” of the family. It’s mind-numbing.

A person close to Butler, who asked to remain anonymous, told ABC 7 that Butler was supposed to pick up her 6-year-old daughter and 8-year-old son in Eva, Oklahoma to celebrate her daughter's birthday.

I still think the original plan was to come back to move the vehicle and hide/destroy any evidence where the vehicle was parked. They banked on having far more time that they actually did, thanks to, I think it was Jilian's husband? that immediately alerted LE and took off driving down there. A couple of them probably would have taken the car out somewhere and burned it. I suspect a trusted family member was probably with the children while all this was going on because it was a pretty big and risky operation.

I also think that wherever they had hidden these women was not to be the final place. They just didn't have time. As soon as the car was found I'm sure they were all being watched closely and weren't able to go move or doing anything else with the remains.

I am so glad they were caught and Veronica and Jilian will be returned to their families but I am also terribly sad for their loss to their families and everyone that loved them.
I agree that they would likely have come back and hidden the car.

But, that makes me wonder if it wasn't drivable--maybe they'd shot out a tire or shot something in the engine that didn't allow them to drive it away right then. I keep thinking that if more than one person did the killing then a second person could drive the women's car away. Unless it was mechanically impossible.

I also agree that they might have returned to where they dumped the remains and moved them when the heat died down.

I'm so thankful that Jilian's husband found the car so early on and thwarted any further evil plans for it.

"There are two people who are dead and four people who committed an absolutely brutal crime," McKee said Monday in a joint press conference held by the OSBI, FBI, Texas County Sheriff's office and Texas County District Attorney's office

"This case did not end the way we had hoped," Spurlock said. "It has certainly been a tragedy for everybody involved."

The murder and kidnapping charges were filed by the Texas County District Attorney on Friday under seal to protect arresting law enforcement officers as well as the children, DA George Leach III said in the press conference. Those documents were unsealed Monday morning after the Saturday arrests were conducted without incident.

Leach said "critical" information to the case came in from the public in the North Texas panhandle, the Oklahoma panhandle and from southwest Kansas
