I was so happy to finally put a face on this young man that I had to post the sketch immediately. I'll come back later with a link.

The sketch was published here in the Times Picayune on March 06, 1975. He was buried in Algiers in June, 1975. I think we might already have that information, though. Mothe Funeral Home handled the arrangements.

Thanks for the sketch, Bessie! :tyou: I guess that is why it is always good to know what the person looked like because I imagined him as looking completely different. I know that his age and height are off, yet the sketch looks like John Patrick Deeny.

Another person who he reminds me of (except I can't tell 100% because the photo on NamUs is so small) is Bayard William Cousins --

In his case, everything seems to match except his age (23 years old). Prior to leaving home, NamUs mentions that he wrote a note to his parents that said not to worry about him (this sounds consistent with the writer of the suicide note, IMO).

I'm not buying the suicide. Where are his shoes? How did he get to that spot? He is a drifter who walks around in socks with a bedsheet, glass jar and notepaper? Someone would have noticed a drifter in socks.
The note does sound very sociopathic ( as someone already mentioned) but my impression is that sociopaths tend to kill other people and not themselves.
I'm wondering (since it was valentines day) if he was gay and answered an ad in a paper. I didn't see anything about how long he'd been deceased though.

Seems the best match with the circumstances that are known. Very little information about Cousins online.

Another long shot, but fugitive Leo Burt?

He was 5'11"-6'0" to the UID's 6'0", both had brown hair, Burt wrote to his parents after his crime*, he studied philosophy (Jean-Paul Sartre) and according to his co-conspirators, he both felt guilty for killing a man in the bombing and yet "cold as steel"/committed to the cause. However, he'd have been 27 in 1975 and as a former crew member, he was very muscular. Though he may have lost muscle mass on the run, you'd still think the UID's description would have noted he had an athletic build.

*Specifically, he told his parents he was looking for journalism work in New York City and asked if they'd heard about the bombing.

That's not bad. Date works, note to parents sounds right. I don't know about the face. I think the physical feature that will help ID our guy is the mouth, i.e., slightly protruding front teeth, rather large (puffy) upper lip. I also tend to believe he really was a teen. Perhaps a little older than 16, but probably not past 20, maybe 21. JMO.

The location is very peculiar. Until I found the local articles, I thought he was he closer to the city. Hwy 23 is a stretch of road south of New Orleans along the Mississippi River that leads to the Gulf of Mexico. There are a few subdivisions along there now, but not 40 years ago. Like the article said, it was largely uninhabited for except and oil and gas, and fishing related facilities. He must have hitchhiked a ride, maybe with a person driving to an offshore job (though it was the end of the week, so maybe not). But why there? Perhaps he thought he'd get a job as a roustabout offshore, but changed his mind. I don't know, but there has to be a particular reason why he was in that area. And why no shoes? Did something bad happen to him, and he was dumped there without his shoes? It reminds me of the Waveland Jane Doe, struck by a car near the rest area wearing slippers. I think she was dumped or abandoned, too.

Here's a link to a map showing a point about 16 miles south of Belle Chasse, and a couple of screen caps.

ETA: The detective who handled the case died in a traffic accident in 1986. :( Not sure about the detective who drew the sketch. Looks like he might have gone on to work on the HSCA JFK/Oswald investigation.

Gary Locklear went missing from Charleston, South Carolina September 6, 1974. Native American went "barefoot". The circumstances don't really fit but he does look alot like the sketch. http://www.charleyproject.org/cases/l/locklear_gary.html

I know it's a lousy picture, but I do see a resemblance. If he were a year older, and his face was thinner. But you're right that the circumstances seem off. The other problem is the scar on Locklear's abdomen. There's no mention of a scar in BCJD's description.

So few choices. :-\

The first person that came through my mind when I saw his picture was Harold, from the movie Harold and Maude. It was released four years prior to his death.

I'm sorry, maybe I skimmed past it. Was there ever a Nam Us profile made for this guy?
