Police have revealed the 'person of Interest' and missing grandfather had money dealings that soured
CBC News Posted: Jul 09, 2014 9:14 AM MT Last Updated: Jul 09, 2014 11:29 AM MT

Calgary police investigating the disappearance of five-year-old Nathan O'Brien and his grandparents say there is "bad blood" related to money between Douglas Garland, the "person of interest" in the case, and the missing grandfather.

Police say they are not aware of any specific business deals between Garland and Alvin Liknes, but money was involved.

That doesn't come as a surprise. I've been wondering about how Douglas was managing financially since his release from prison. It doesn't look like he had any sort of real job where he received a salary. Instead, it looks like he has been living with his parents. It's possible that his parents have been giving him an early inheritance, or a loan, so he can become independent and productive. If he received an early inheritance, or a loan, and Alvin enticed Douglas to put that money into Alvin's business ventures, and that money was lost, Douglas could feel like he has nothing left to lose, and he could feel really angry that his sister's father in law would take advantage of him. I'm not saying that this happened, but it could have.

In my experience and IMHO, just because you are in your 80s doesn't mean you are the salt of the earth, pillar of the community, or all around nice, law abiding person.

Just throwing it out there as a general statement not referring to anyone in this case…

Is this the first time they've been there? There is a closer dump than that to the Parkhill residence. Wonder if they obtained CCTV footage from around Spyhill landfill?

This is video from the CBC Edmonton news- late night July 4. The top story shows close up video of the "marks" outside the home. Clearly looks to be blood IMO

IMO police have the right guy with the POI but not enough to charge him. They are hoping he cracks and confesses. Sadly, I believe we are dealing with a triple homicide. Because of his mental health issues he may not have been at all aware of exactly what he was doing. He may have lacked the moral compass to differentiate between killing an adult and a child.... not that either are ok.... but I hope you get what I'm driving at.

Once they find the bodies the police will be able to charge him.

OF COURSE the police know more than they are saying. They need to maintain the integrity of the investigation. The slightest foul up can mess up a case if it goes to trial. Especially if POI is all lawyered up.

What looks to be his truck be driving around the neighbourhood numerous times during key times is extremely suspicious. Why else would be be there?
The family/business connection is only another link that makes him suspect. Now they need to get the evidence to they can charge him. MOO

Established the ambulances are just a precaution due to heat given the numerous search personnel and LE.

That's a lot of emergency personnel/resource ($$$!) to be tying up in case of heat exhaustion.

There is always outrage regarding reported response times because ambulances/attendances are forced to stay at the hospital to fill in the paperwork before being allowed to get back out there. (As opposed to one of the team staying at the hospital and 'tag teaming' a third from another team that stayed behind to do their paperwork)

Typically in Canada (where I'm from) we use St. John's Ambulance for 'gatherings'.

Sorry...I'm in a different province. The ME has an office outside of the hospital but they do the autopsies at one of our large hospitals. I deal with them in my province and it seems to be a bit different.

Sorry I assumed you were talking about Calgary lol

Isn't that interesting. For anybody else up on simple fraud charges they wouldn't have this kind of lawyer.

Sounds like Kim Ross wants to be where the action is IF this develops beyond simple fraud charges - great marketing for his services as everyone in Canada will know his name now - and possibly telling that DG hooked up with him in the first place.

There must be something in the employment contracts that ensures safety of employees in work environments where there could be health risks (such as exposure to dangerous chemicals). Since the search area is 30-45 minutes from the nearest hospital, it's better to have an ambulance on site than to have an emergency situation where there is a 1-1.5 hour delay in receiving treatment.

When this case was first reported, I was out of the country so i have not been following since the beginning.
There is a lot of interest in the green truck as it was caught on camera on several occasions

Has forensics been done and was there anything found in the truck that would lead police to believe that the family, Grandmother, Grandfather and little boy, were removed from the house in this vehicle? From what I have read, there was blood in the house, so someone was injured. Or is the interest only because it was in the area and because of who it belonged to?

Sorry if already asked and answered....

Sorry, I tried to quote and reply to a previous post regarding wells. Not sure how to delete this and do it properly:

Hi, I think this refers to "well sites" per the latest update from the police. "Companies who own rural sites, such as well sites, are also asked to please check their properties for anything suspicious." per the latest update. This is oil/natural gas country and the land that oil and gas wells are on are called well sites. Please let me know if I need to link anything to this :)

Morbid question: in Canada would bodies be transported in ambulances or a different kind of vehicle?

If it is a deceased person(s) at a crime scene, then a van from the ME's office would pick up the body as most likely an autopsy would be required. At least, this would be the procedure in Ontario.

Garland was detained on Friday, and today he has a lawyer. I have to wonder if he applied for legal aid, specified that he needed someone with experience, and it has taken a couple of days to line up someone like Kim Ross.

In hindsight, does anyone else think that the Amber Alert should have been/should be on NO alone to keep the focus on the missing child?

Crown and defence are agreeing to Garland's release, hiccup is address where Garland will reside, case back Friday

Or perhaps one or two lawyers offered up their services?

No. There are 3 missing persons. The child may or may not be in the company of the two others. I think they needed to get everybody's photos out for the public. If it were just NO alone then if he were seen with his grandparents everybody would ignore it.

Regardless...they are still missing over a week later with an active amber alert for them.
