This looks like a case of intense jealousy. Something seen too often in crime. Think Bryan Kohberger, Lori Drew, Gertrude Baniszewski, Jodi Arias, Diane Zamora, Yoselyn Ortega, Betty Broderick, Elliot Rodger, Audrey Hale, Eric Harris, Nikolas Cruz, Adam Lanza, Salvador Ramos, Seung-Hui Cho, Panya Khamrab, Omar Mateen, Stephen Paddock, Anders Breivik, Osama bin Laden, Adolf Hitler, Joseph Stalin, and Mao Zedong.

I’m also thinking drugs were involved.

“We knew very early that there was a possible homicide,” the chief investigator said.
“We just didn’t have a body and didn’t have the suspect at the time,”

He said the arrests came after a credible tip last Tuesday. Brown said the tip ultimately led to the arrest of Carr and Kelly along with physical evidence found at Isbell’s home.

“This tip we actually received names that we had been looking at in the beginning,” he said.

“One of the codefendants was very cooperative and helped us to lead to Mary’s remains where we recovered them Wednesday,” he said.

“It’s very inhuman and brutal what these ladies did to Mary,” he said. “It’s terrible.”

Tip from daughters boyfriend or ex boyfriend? Daughter cracked? My first thought after tea the Daily Mail article was drug use.

On Tuesday, June 20, 2023, DeKalb County Investigators a tip about the disappearance of Mary Elizabeth Isbell. It names people investigators had been looking into earlier in the investigation. They determined it to be credible and after search warrants were performed and individuals were interviewed, two arrests were made in the connection with the murder of Mary Elizabeth Isbell. DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Wheldon says that it appears that her death was caused by bring thrown off a cliff and called it "heinous and brutal.
Statements from witnesses and co-defendants led to the arrests of two women in the case. One of the co-defendants led investigators to Mary's remains. According to DeKalb County Sheriff Nick Wheldon, all of the women knew each other and appear to be connected through another person identified as a "boyfriend". None of the people currently involved in the case are from DeKalb County.
Loretta Kay Carr, 45, of Fort Payne, was arrested on the evening of Sunday, June 25, 2023, by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office Special Response Team for Capital Murder.

Two people have been charged in the death of a missing woman whose remains were recently identified since her disappearance in 2021.

Loretta Kay Carr and Jessie Eden Kelly have been arrested and charged with capital murder in the death of Mary Elizabeth Isbell, who was first reported missing in December 2021 by her ex-husband, according to a statement from law enforcement in DeKalb County, Alabama. Carr, 45, was arrested by the DeKalb County Sheriff’s office on Sunday, June 25, while Kelly is in custody in Pennsylvania awaiting extradition to Missouri on felony charges, the statement said.

"We recovered physical evidence from [Isbell's] home that showed signs of a struggle," said Nick Brown, chief investigator with the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office.

Brown said it is believed the mother and daughter killed Isbell by pushing her off a cliff at the reserve.

"It's very inhuman," said Brown. "Brutal what these ladies did to Mary."

After some digging, Brown said a possible motive has become apparent.

"They are all acquaintances, mainly to a boyfriend," said Carr. "They all do come back to one specific person."

The remains found would be turned over to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where they would be positively identified as Carr's, on what would have been her 39th birthday.

"I know speaking to Mary's family that she was saved, she was washed in the blood," said Brown. "I don't have a doubt that she's looking down right now saying, finally."

Carr is currently behind bars at the DeKalb County Detention Center, before her first preliminary hearing, which will be held on August 21.

Kelly is in custody in Pennsylvania and will first have to be transferred to Missouri to face other charges before she is extradited to Alabama.

She was first reported missing to the Hartselle Police Department by her ex-husband in 2021, the sheriff's office says.

They say Isbell's death wasn't an accident.
"We recovered physical evidence from her home that showed signs of a struggle," Brown told WAAY-TV.
Almost two years after her disappearance, WAAY-TV reports that the sheriff's office received a crucial tip.

"We were able to track down two suspects in the case," says Brown.
The suspects are Loretta Kay Carr and her daughter Jessie Kelly.

Wow! Jealousy over a boyfriend and this "mother" took her daughter along. Sounds to me like the daughter cracked and told LE where to find the body. I am glad that Elizabeth's son knows where she is and can bury her. He knows she didn't choose to leave him.

Kinda reminds me of the Texas Love Triangle case. The murder of Adrianne Jones by Diane Zamora and David Graham.

According to the motions, Carr’s lawyers say “prejudicial pretrial publicity” could jeopardize her case. They argue that the court should prohibit all “attorneys, parties, witnesses, law enforcement personnel, and court personnel” connected to the prosecution or investigation from releasing information to the news media.

In another motion, the attorneys argue for prohibiting broadcasting or photographing the trial or court hearings as “the media has sought at every stage of these proceedings to turn Loretta Kay Carr’s trial into a public spectacle.”

A DeKalb County Judge granted a gag order in the case of a woman accused of pushing another woman off a cliff to her death.

The judge ruled that attorneys, investigators and family members connected to the Loretta Carr murder case cannot talk to the media.

According to court documents filed on Wednesday, Carr’s lawyers stated that the State is seeking the death penalty in this case. WAFF 48 News has reached out to the District Attorney’s Office for confirmation and has not received a response.

Carr’s bond hearing has been moved to Aug. 2 at 1:30 p.m.

Sure they want to focus on the bad old “media” and not this poor lady who died or how.

Lawyers for a Fort Payne woman charged with capital murder are asking the judge to curtail comments from participants in the case, to protect the woman’s ability to get a fair trial, court documents indicate.

[...]

DeKalb County District Judge Steven Whitmire has set a preliminary hearing for Carr for Aug. 21.

In the meantime, defense attorneys Jeffery Montgomery and Richard Ray filed motions to restrict comment on the case, and to prevent recording or broadcasting of court proceedings.

In a motion filed Wednesday, they asked the court to prohibit participants from commenting or releasing information to the media – to be applied to attorneys, parties, law enforcement and court personnel.

According to the motion, the State is seeking the death penalty in the case, and the Supreme Court has recognized that prejudicial pretrial publicity “can jeopardize a criminal defendant’s right to a fair trial by an impartial jury.”

In early July, a judge granted a motion for a gag order that prevents witnesses, law enforcement, court employees, prosecutors and basically anyone involved in the case from sharing any details with media and a motion denying cameras during the proceedings.

One of the women cooperated and helped lead authorities to Isbell’s remains, where a search team found them at the Little River Canyon National Park on June 28. The Alabama Department of Forensic Science’s Huntsville Laboratory later confirmed the remains as Isbell’s – on what would have been her 39th birthday.

Kelly no longer appears on the jail roster in Pennsylvania. She was awaiting extradition to Missouri, where she had previously been charged with felony burglary charges.

Wow, that's a blast from the past (1996)! And yes, Zamora and Graham are both serving life sentences. Such a stupid stupid thing to do -- both had promising futures and they decided to remove another person's promising future because one person was pathologically jealous.

Crazy case, and a terrifying set of circumstances. Gonna go out on a limb and speculate that the boyfriend involved may not have been worth committing a brutal murder over.

I'm a bit confused by the investigator's comment that M was "saved... washed in the blood" -- is this a religious reference (born again / blood of the saviour) or something factual specific to this case?
