Amber Nicole Thompson, 33

Craighead County Deputy Lloyd Norman found the boy, who told him he was walking to school because he missed the bus. The boy explained that he got in trouble with his mom, 33-year-old Amber Nicole Thompson, and she sent him to bed without dinner the night before.

Officer Norman took the boy home and found his mother was asleep in her bedroom. She confirmed that what her son told Norman was accurate and said, "It was not her problem" if he had to walk to school on his own.

The boy told Norman that he was sent to bed without eating dinner the night before because he “got in trouble” for not watching his younger sibling. The boy said his mom told him to set an alarm and get himself up and ready for school because “she wasn’t going to.”

The child told Norman that he had missed the bus, so he started walking to school. According to Google Maps, his home is located approximately 7.5 miles from the school. The boy also reportedly told Norman he had not eaten breakfast.

The affidavit explained while speaking with the other children in the home, “numerous bruises” were found on a three-year-old child’s body.

Norman spoke with the child’s father, who admitted to spanking the child for lying on Sunday, March 31, but explained he was not aware of the other bruises. He said he was told that the youngest brother hit the three-year-old with a plastic bat.

Deputy Lloyd Norman talked to the child, who said he had gotten into trouble the night before and he was forced to go to bed without his supper. He told the deputy that two other boys, ages 2 and 3, also lived in the house.

Norman asked him if he had eaten breakfast, and the boy said no. The deputy gave the boy some beef jerky that he had with him.

The state Department of Human Services came to the residence and bruises were found on the 3-year-old boy’s face, arms, back and buttocks. Deputies talked with Thompson’s husband who admitted to swatting the boy three times on Sunday for lying.

When the deputy took the boy back to his home, he was unable to get a response from the homeowner, Amber Nicole Thompson. He and another deputy entered the house through the unlocked front door and called for Thompson but still got no response. They searched the home and found the other two boys asleep, and located Thompson asleep in one of the bedrooms.

Thompson told the deputies that it was not her problem if the boy walked to school. She said the 7-year-old was old enough to get himself up and get ready for school.

District Judge David Boling found probable cause to charge Amber Nicole Thompson with second-degree domestic battery of a person older than 60 or less than 12 years of age, a class C felony, and first-degree endangering the welfare of an incompetent with the risk of death or physical injury, a class D felony.

Boling set Amber Thompson’s bond at $50,000. Her next court date is May 24 in Craighead County Circuit Court.

Oh, just makes me want to cry about that brave little 7-year-old -- he did exactly what he was told, and he didn't want to miss school, either. He was trying to do all the right things. All this on an empty stomach -- he had to be very hungry.
So glad he was found by the Deputy and then the other Deputy who was called. Man, they walked into it, didn't they?
IMO, it turned out to be a good thing on that day that sweet 7-year-old was walking -- he was found by someone who could help him and his other siblings, as well as dealing with his I-can't-say-it excuse for a mom.
Hoping the children are treated well.
What a fine, brave 7-year-old.
