Arias files motion to fire lead attorney Kirk Nurmi

I'm not a psychiatrist/psychologist or any other kind of mental health expert, but I have a sibling who has been diagnosed with schizo-affective disorder (a psychiatric diagnosis) and Borderline Personality Disorder (a personality/psychological diagnosis). The mental illness (schizo-affective disorder) can be treated with psychotropic drugs, but Borderline Personality Disorder has no pharmaceutical remedy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is frequently recommended for patients with BPD but is costly and works only when the patient acknowledges and understands the Borderline diagnosis and is willing to make the effort to change his/her behaviors. Most Borderlines don't recognize or accept the severity of their personality disorder, so therapy is rarely successful. My sister tried to manipulate a Cognitive Behavioral Therapist who "bought" my sister's tales-of-woe hook, line, and sinker until advised (by me and DH) that my sister's claims were bull@#$%. I suspect that Jodi Arias would likewise manipulate a pricy therapist who might be caught off-guard by Jodi's verbal savvy.

In my humble opinion, Borderline means that an individual does not meet the specific criteria for diagnosis with a psychiatric illness but is not so mentally ill that they cannot function in society. :moo:

Thank you for the information. So we must have a huge population of these borderline personality disordered people and they just randomly slice, dice and shoot someone? There must be another diagnosis in the books for this monster.
Since I admittedly have no education in the field, I go with Psycho. Scary!

Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness. I am a medical student and I'm on a psych rotation right now at an in state psych hospital and there are many people there who have BPD. It is a serious illness. I would not doubt if JA had this or in the least borderline personality traits.

But if it cannot be treated, why not go with Psycho? It fits her well

Noooo Bette....the name of the personality disorder is not what you think and you can research where the origin of the name came from (or read my post above).
Borderline Personality Disorder is a real diagnosis per the Diagnostic Statistical Manual. It has it's own code used for insurance reimbursement purposes. Current treatment protocols now lean towards Dialectical Therapy.

What is dialectical therapy? Thanks.

You can't take the term "Borderline Personality Disorder" to mean literally borderline on not having an issue. It is a real Personality Disorder.
The term comes from way back when---and referenced the symptoms between neurosis and psychosis. Hence the borderline word in the diagnosis.

It can be misleading, I agree.

But it sounds so benign. If I were a juror and someone said she had a borderline personality disorder, I would think the person who diagnosed her was lacking in wisdom of psychotic illness. I don't mean to sound argumentative but it is clear she is a murdering psycho to me who is FAR past being able to be helped or to integrate with society ever again. JMO.

Weren't there other diagnosis that DeMarte was not allowed to present because it was deemed too prejudicial?

True, and how can she claim ineffective council when he gave her a decent defense and Wilmott was also on the team???

Which also begs the question regarding the lack of mitigation witnesses. How was that Nurmi's sole responsibility? Did she not also have someone who was supposed to be a mitigation specialist?

As much as I disliked Nurmi's courtroom demeanor, he was attempting to defend her. She need look no further than herself to blame for the fact she is now a convicted murderer.

I think she's setting the groundwork for the super popular "incompetent defense" appeal. Years from now, when people sadly forget about Travis, she will get her many supporters who will petition for her to get a new trial.

Unfortunately for her, Travis Alexander will NEVER be forgotten. His friends, family and Juan Martinez will definitely make sure of that.

:)

JA did confess to killing Travis. She has not denied it. What the jury did not believe was her claim of self-defense. They believed she planned the murder and carried it out with extreme cruelty. What is left is her sentencing. The defense did fine. JA just told one to many lies and inconsistencies for the jury to even consider she might be telling the truth. Plus the facts did not totally match her story of how it happened which would tend to make the average person realize she is lying. jmo

I doubt that Cole Bartiromo and Newsball would be in any way considered mainstream, much less media.

Here is an article about his own previous exploits and adventures in prison:

Former teen swindler tries to start over
Cole Bartiromo, now 26 and out of prison, seeks a new and legitimate career as 'The Dollar Scholar.'

"Bartiromo went to prison for 33 months in 2004 for two frauds he committed after the Internet scam. In November 2009, just weeks before his probation was about to end for those crimes, he went back to prison for violating probation by using a cell phone in a halfway house.

He got out of prison in late July and ended a mandatory stint in a halfway house in late September, and no longer is under federal supervision.

However, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Internal Revenue Service continue to chase Bartiromo for fines that now total $2.8 million."

Quite a long and interesting article.

looks like her "penpal" has been discovered.

.......birds of a feather ALWAYS flock together.

Of course there is no "ineffective counsel". This was never a crime of who-did-it. JA admitted to that as you have said. The amount of overkill, combined with her lies and attempt to cover up the murder negated any possibility of self-defense. Nurmi did his job and not even the best criminal defense attorney could have altered the outcome, in my opinion.

he appears to still be a criminal scam artist. I thought those with felonies couldn't talk to others with felonies in prison.

reading the stuff people tweet back to her is just worry some (from her supporters of course)

they are 100% sure her conviction will be over turned  and some have already sent hundreds of dollars to her

After reading that piece it clarifies what Travis was dealing with--the frustration he must have felt! I still believe there was more~~but wow.

They know nothing. First she must be sentenced, go to prison, serve 5 or so years waiting for an appeal. That is if she gets one. What a waste of money.
I forget, if she gets lwop does she still get an appeal? It was quoted on WS. an appeal costs between 200.000 and 300,000. If she wants her own Team she must pay for it herself. I know they get one free with the DP.. Hard to keep track of everything! :floorlaugh: Josie take care.

What is dialectical therapy? Thanks.

Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) treatment is a cognitive-behavioral approach that emphasizes the psychosocial aspects of treatment. The theory behind the approach is that some people are prone to react in a more intense and out-of-the-ordinary manner toward certain emotional situations, primarily those found in romantic, family and friend relationships. RIP Lou Reed. Thank you for the beautiful music now soar free! You'll be missed!!

Sorry for the OT

DeMarte did present the diagnosis of Borderline Personality Disorder and if I had to guess what other diagnosis wasn't presented because it could be deemed too prejudicial is this: Dissociative Disorder (aka Multiple Personality Disorder).
It's a good thing that it wasn't presented too if my theory is correct. Dissociative Disorder is one of the few diagnosis that can get the death penalty off the table due to insanity.
