Australia AUSTRALIA - IVAN MILAT - The Backpacker Murderer

The father of one of Ivan Milat’s suspected victims says he can’t understand why the serial killer failed to take the opportunity to confess to his crimes when he had nothing to lose.

Brian Letcher’s son Peter, 18, was found dead in Jenolan State Forest in January 1988 in what was initially believed to be a drug-related murder.

It is now suspected Milat picked up Letcher as he hitchhiked home to Bathurst in November 1987 after visiting a former girlfriend in Sydney.

Serial killer Ivan Milat — infamous for a series of backpacker murders — is dead aged 74. Before he died, police exacted their final revenge.

Australia’s worst serial killer Ivan Milat has died

New South Wales Minister for Counter Terrorism and Corrections Anthony Roberts told The Daily Telegraph Milat had shown no remorse for his crimes and deserved no mercy on his deathbed, adding he could “rot in hell”.

“He was sentenced to die in jail and he was going to die in jail,” Mr Roberts said this morning.

“I wasn’t going to have him take up a public hospital bed. Both the commissioner and I were of that opinion.

“We had him removed from a hospital and sent back to Long Bay Jail. He can rot in hell.

“He showed no remorse. We ensured the sentence was carried out.”[/

I heard on the radio he was cremated Friday.
“His corpse has now been unceremoniously incinerated and he will pay for it. It has already been arranged for the full reimbursement of costs to be paid from his prison account. His last wish has been emphatically denied and he can now rot in hell where he belongs

In the early hours of that morning, Milat was found unresponsive in his cell.
There were instructions not to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead.
In the months and weeks leading up to his death the serial killer repeatedly refused treatment for his terminal cancer.
Milat was offered appointments with medical professionals including gastroenterologists but did not attend any until he was very sick.

Friends of missing persons Stephen Lapthorne and Michelle Pope are convinced they may have located the striking lime green van they were last seen in and it has possible links to Ivan Milat.

The remnants of a 1977 lime green Bedford CF van — strikingly similar to that of missing person Stephen Lapthorne and his girlfriend Michelle Pope — was discovered in a bush fire trail just over 50km from the dumping ground of serial killer Ivan Milat.

Oh sorry. The article is dated yesterday. But it seems that the van was discovered in January last year.

It seems to say that the Police had ruled it out due to a one number difference in the number plate. And the friends of the missing couple say that a bushfire went through and the van was completely burned out.
So looks like this isn't new news. I haven't been following the case.

There's also a link to a Podcast about the case called Lost in Sydney.
