Heinze was born in West Germany and emigrated to Australia, along with his parents and two older brothers, in 1959.

Heinze had lived here ever since, save for a brief period in the 1970s when he
accompanied his parents back to Germany

“His eldest brother died in 2014, his father still lives and his mother died in 1990,” he said.

“His father’s health is not good, he has a heart condition … he worked as a musician, and my client gave up work to become a carer for his father in 2013.”

Mr Boucaut said Heinze was a qualified chef and father of five, who had married and divorced twice prior to 2012.

Bill Boucaut SC, for Heinze, said his client did not accept the jury’s verdicts in the Salt Creek case, and had filed an appeal to have them overturned.

He said that, as a result, he would not be addressing the court about the offending and would speak only about his client’s history.

A bit more of RH’s history:

His mother died in 1990 and a brother died in 2014. His father is in his late 80s.
RH left work to become a carer for his father in 2013.

He became a qualified chef and worked in various hotels and restaurants around Adelaide.

He first married in the late 70s. The marriage lasted 12 years produced a daughter and a son who visit him in jail.

He remarried in 1990. The marriage lasted 22 years and produced three sons. He maintains contact with those children.

In the 1990s he obtained a general builders' licence and worked since in the building industry, including for about two years in Germany.

On remand Heinze has worked in the kitchen at Yatala jail.

Roman Heinze was a known sexual predator when he attacked two backpackers

When he answered a Gumtree ad and picked up the Brazilian and German backpackers, he already was banned from contacting women online, had previously attacked a backpacker and had raped another woman.

The German said she was sad that innocent backpackers could be attacked but added: “You could not take what Australia meant to me. I know this crime has nothing to do with the country, but only with (you).”

I can well imagine this sexual predator has committed many crimes against women. He belonged to so many internet dating sites and seemed constantly on the prowl. I hope he's at least 85 by the time he's released from prison.

RH's various criminal cases are such a “saga” that his lawyer needs more time to prepare a challenge to his Salt Creek kidnapping convictions, a court has heard.

Today Bill Boucaut SC, for Heinze, asked the Court of Criminal Appeal to postpone his client’s application for permission to appeal against the verdicts of a jury.

Conceding he could have simply sent the court an email, Mr Boucaut said he thought it more appropriate to explain the situation in person.

“The bottom line is I’m not in a position to proceed with the appeal this morning,” he said.

“That’s because the saga, if I can call it that, in respect of his forensic journey has only just come to a conclusion.

“Time has not permitted me to go back and revisit the papers in respect of the first trial (for the Salt Creek offending).”

Heinze, 61, will be sentenced on Wednesday for crimes including aggravated kidnapping, sexual and physical assault, and endangering life.

Both Justice Peek and prosecutor Jim Pearce QC said they understood Mr Boucaut’s difficulty, and had no issue with postponing the hearing.

Justice Peek said he would continue to hear the appeal, and adjourned it until next month.

Justice Kelly said the only positive thing to come out of Heinze’s numerous offences were the courageous women who survived his foul acts and the “true Australian” men who came to their aid.

She gave particular praise to the German and Brazilian backpackers who survived Heinze’s Coorong assault, saying they were “courageous enough and intelligent enough to outwit and outsmart you at every step.”
