CA - Blaze Bernstein, 19, Lake Forest, Jan 2018 - Media *NO DISCUSSION*

New, Disturbing Details Emerge About Man Held in Killing of Friend - CBS-LA (includes video)

Detectives said a conversation on Snapchat led the 19-year-old victim to meet up with 20-year-old Woodward at a Lake Forest park over a week ago.

The two attended the Orange County School of the Arts together.

KCAL9’s Stacey Butler said several things were learned Friday evening from Woodward’s social media footprint.

On one site, he defended the Confederate flag, saying it was a symbol or Southern pride and not hate.

On another site, he was asked what two things he would want if stranded on a deserted island and he said “The Bible and a Colt .45.”
If he could learn a new skill, Woodward replied “Waterboarding.”

If he was joking or not is unclear, but when asked about his attitudes toward human cloning, he had a terse reply:
“Just one of me in the world is already bad enough,” he wrote.

An anonymous poster wrote, “You are violence. It scares me.”
Woodward replied, “I wouldn’t fight anybody unless they attacked me.”

Note: The video report states that Blaze's funeral will be held Monday, January 15.

Thanks to Voice4theSilent, a Tribute to Blaze by PennAppétit on Facebook:

We would like to honor our amazingly talented, passionate, intelligent, kind and devoted Whisk copy editor, Blaze N. Bernstein.

Although we are devastated to announce that he passed last week, we would like to take this chance to celebrate him and all the light he brought to Penn Appétit, the Penn community, and all those around him whose lives he touched.

Blaze, 19, was from Foothill Ranch, California. He loved the written word. He was a copy associate for 34th Street, wrote opinion columns for the Daily Pennsylvanian, and the incoming managing editor of Penn Appétit. He had not declared a major, but spent his freshman year in the Vagelos Molecular Sciences Program.

We miss you dearly, Blaze. You will always be a part of our Penn Appétit family. We love you and keep #whiskingit.

Blaze Bernstein Tributes Spread As Murdered Student’s Family Asks For ‘Acts Of Kindness’

A makeshift memorial to Blaze Bernstein created out of rocks and pebbles has continued to grow as the family of the slain college student called on people to make something positive out of his murder.

Collections of small rocks bearing Bernstein’s name and likeness sit alongside candles in Borrega Park near the spot where the University of Pennsylvania sophomore was killed and left in a shallow grave.

(snip)

One member of a Facebook site devoted to Bernstein’s memory explained that Jews often use rocks and pebbles as a form of remembrance.

Blazebernstein.org, a website set up in his memory, went live yesterday with photos and tributes and ways of giving to charity in his honor.

Funeral service honors murdered OC student Blaze Bernstein
http://abc7.com/funeral-service-honors-murdered-oc-student-blaze-bernstein/2949704/

Here is the statement issued by the Bernstein family:
"We are heartbroken.

As we lay Blaze to rest, we ask that communities around the world that were touched by Blaze's life, help us keep his memory and loving spirit alive. Blaze was on a path to repair our World and it is a moral imperative that we all take steps now to make sure that his dream is realized. We won't succumb to hate, bitterness, or disillusionment; we will use wisely the time we have left together.

When we stop crying we will start doing positive things to affect change. We ask that everyone work towards something good. Stop being complacent. Do something now. In the months to come, as part of our healing process, we too will act to heal the world. That is what Blaze would want. We still believe that people are good. We have seen this firsthand in the tremendous amount of support we received from people everywhere. We can do this!

Please join us at blazebernstein.org to find out how each of us can spread light in Blaze's memory through acts of kindness. Our love and blessings to all."

As homicide case unfolds, friends of Blaze Bernstein find ways to remember him on campus

...
"Bernstein’s mother, Jeanne Pepper, told The Daily Pennsylvanian that for the College sophomore, being a doctor “just clicked.”

“Whatever you do I just want you to be productive, accomplish something, and I want you to do something good, just do good with your life,” Pepper recalled telling her son. “And he took that to heart.”
....

At Penn, faculty and students worked to organize a small candlelight vigil for Bernstein at the Kelly Writers House on Jan. 10 when reports of Bernstein's death emerged. The next day, the University also held a support group for the entire Penn community in Houston Hall.

...
In addition, College sophomore and Business Manager for Penn Appetit Kate Kassin said they were considering doing a themed issue "to honor Blaze and his character.”

Prokupek said apart from having a talent for writing, Bernstein had really taken up cooking and developed a real passion for it. While most staff at Penn Appetit are skilled at either writing or cooking, Bernstein was good at both. He was in charge of copy-editing the entire written section of the magazine, but still submitted his own recipes to the cookbook that the magazine put together last semester.

In a statement obtained by PEOPLE, the Bernstein family addressed the details of their son’s death, saying,

“We are saddened to hear, on the day we laid our son to rest, that gruesome details of the cause of his death were published.”

“Our son was a beautiful gentle soul who we loved more than anything,” the statement continued. “We were proud of everything he did and who he was. He had nothing to hide. We are in solidarity with our son and the LGBTQ community. There is still much discovery to be done and if it is determined that this was a hate crime, we will cry not only for our son, but for LGBTQ people everywhere that live in fear or who have been victims of hate crime.”
