Looks like this skull was initially reported as a female in 1976 but then changed to male in 1977. There's a good amount of conflicting information.

"Placer Skeleton Is That Of Young Adult Woman," The Sacramento Bee (Sacramento, CA), November 2, 1976 pg 5.

"The skeletal remains...[were] found east of Foresthill...the remains were found scattered over a wide area along the Beecroft Trail that leads into the North Fork American River Canyon."

"The young woman appeared to have been shot in the left temple."

"The victims teeth were in good repair."

"Women's Bones are Discovered," Auburn Journal (Auburn, CA), November 3, 1976, pg 9

"The body had originally been buried but had ben dug up by animals."

"The skull showed evidence of only one gunshot wound."

"Dental chart [was taken]."

Capps, Steve, "Jane Doe No. 1: Identification - Or An Unmarked Grave," Auburn Journal (Auburn, CA), Dec 10, 1976, pg [1], [14]

"[The victim] was of slight build, stood about 5'3" tall. [Their] hair was black and [they] were possibly black or of mixes racial background. [They] were somewhere between the age of 18 and 25."

"The skeleton...amounted to the skull, lower jaw, eight ribs, the right and left pelvic bones, two femurs and two tibias."

"The [victim's] hair was black and in very tight curls."

"The [victim] never had any fillings but had several teeth extracted, indicating that perhaps a dentist had taken x-rays."

"The [victim] had also suffered two hairlines fractures on the forehead...though it could not be determined or not they occurred at the time of the shooting."

"The skeleton was about 18 months to two years old."

Capps, Steve, "'Jane' Is really 'John'," Auburn Journal (Auburn, CA), Feb 11, 1977 pg 1.

"The bones were sent to San Francisco...and were determined to be of a young man, 17 to 19 years old, who weighted about 145 pound's, stood at five feet, seven inches tall, and had very curly brown hair of moderate length. He had "O" type blood and had been dead about two years."

"Slaying Still Is A Puzzle," The Sacramento Bee (Sacramento, CA), Feb 14, 1977, pg 12.

This article is basically a repeat of a previous one but mentions if the skeleton was not identified it would be buried in a local cemetery.
