San Francisco police double reward for cold case ‘Doodler’ serial killer | Fox News
"San Francisco police are taking a new look into the 1970s-era cold case "Doodler" serial killer investigation -- doubling the reward money and saying they’ve identified an additional victim.

They’re offering $200,000 for information that helps break the case – in which they’ve had a person if interest for decades but not enough evidence to bring charges. To that end, they’ve released an "age-progression" sketch showing what the victim may have looked like in the ‘70s and what he could look like now, and asking for any potentially additional victims to come forward.

The Doodler, described as a Black male between 19 and 25 years old, attacked White, gay men, according to authorities. He would meet them at after-hours gay clubs or restaurants, lure them out for sex and then stab them to death in "rage killing" attacks.''

Authorities are asking for any other potential survivors to come forward to help crack the case.

Anyone with information is urged to call Cold Case Investigators Sgt. Alan Levy at 415 553-9245, alan.leavy@sfgov.org , Daniel Dedet at 415 553-1450, daniel.dedet@sfgov.org or Daniel Cunningham at 415 553-9515, daniel.cunningham@sfgov.org.''

Were any similar crimes ever found? Thinking the same thing!

An SF Gate article from last month cites Kevin Fagan of the Chronicle as saying there are likely victims in other states, but there isn't any actual quote or reference to what he's talking about. Anyone else aware of a string of stabbings of gay white men in the 70s in another state?

Does anyone have any information on the other victims? I keep seeing that the Doodler killed 14, but I only know about five (or six now, I guess).

There was a time when that # was representative of Doodler Murders (not yet called Doodler murders @ the time) as well as the "Sado Murders" and a string of Tenderloin murders of trans women. Late '75 they separated the three.

There was plenty of unsolved murders of gay men in Toronto in the 70's, FWIW.
This lengthy article starts with the murders committed by Bruce M, but the latter half of the article references the gay murders that occurred before the serial killer Bruce M.'s time.
Sketch of the still unknown suspect in at least one of the 70's murders below. Wondering if the Doodler ever traveled to Canada? speculation, imo.

So I’m a bit confused on the dates here. I honestly don’t know if the first victim was found on January 24 or 27. I also don’t know when the final victim was last seen.

Possible re posts.

''Police believe the killer stabbed at least five men to death from early 1974 to late 1975.
In January, San Francisco police identified a potential sixth victim as Warren Andrews, who was assaulted at Land’s End in April 1975, police said. He was found unconscious and died several weeks later.''
''Kevin Fagan, a reporter for the San Francisco Chronicle, said the killer may have far more victims than officially reported — as many as 17. ''

SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) – Earlier this year, the San Francisco Police Department doubled the reward for information leading to the capture of “The Doodler” serial killer to $200,000. Investigators are hoping to solve the more-than-four-decades-old cold case.

Who was The Doodler?

The Doodler was a serial killer believed to have been responsible for at least six murders stretching from January 1974 to June 1975.
What made him unique — and the inspiration for his name — is he would sketch his victims, whom he met at gay bars and nightclubs, before having sexual relations with them and killing them.
The Doodler was 19-25 years old at the time, Black, and around 6 feet tall, according to police.

Who did he target?

There are at least six killings police have definitively tied to The Doodler’s modus operandi, though he may have been responsible for up to 14 murders and three assaults.

The call came in just before 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 27, 1974.

“I believe there might be a dead person ... on the beach ... across from Ulloa Street, if you follow the street right down to the water,” the caller told a San Francisco police dispatcher. Didn’t give his name, just hung up.

Cops rushed down to Ocean Beach. Sprawled at the water’s edge, about to be washed out by the waves, was a man’s body. They dragged him back onto dry sand and took a close look. Seemed to be about 50 years old. Balding, heavy-set. Seventeen stab wounds, front and back, including on his hands — he’d tried to fight off his killer.

According to The Encyclopedia of Unsolved Crimes, a 2004 book examining unsolved killings, disappearances and other crimes, “When the murders began, based on discrepancies in choice of victims, authorities believed they were tracking three different serial killers.”

The encyclopedia ties The Doodler to the murders of five Tenderloin neighborhood drag queens, six men who “were selected from the sadomasochistic world of leather bars” south of Market Street, and six men who were picked up in the Castro neighborhood. The encyclopedia states that The Doodler seduced the final victims by sketching cartoon drawings of them.

Potential 6th victim ID’d in 70s Bay Area ‘Doodler’ killings
Each of the men definitively believed to be victims by the SFPD were found dead outdoors in picturesque areas of San Francisco’s westside. They were:

  • Gerald Cavanaugh, 49, discovered 1/27/74 at Ocean Beach
  • Joseph Stevens, 27, discovered 6/25/74 at the Spreckels Lake Model Yacht Facility in Golden Gate Park
  • Klaus Christmann, 31, discovered 7/7/74 at Ocean Beach
  • Warren Andrews, 52, discovered 4/27/75 at Land’s End
  • Frederick Capin, 32, discovered 5/12/75 at Ocean Beach
  • Harald Gullberg, 66, discovered 6/4/75 at Lincoln Park
Andrews was just announced as the sixth victim this January. The victims were each found with stab wounds.''

''Florida police need help after identifying teen’s remains
One of those victims, who survived, later told police he met The Doodler at the Truck Stop diner at Market and Church streets, where The Doodler was drawing animals on a napkin. The Doodler told the victim he was going to art school to be a cartoonist. The victim himself had an art background and, having spent considerable time with The Doodler, provided police the description that led to the sketches police are using to this day.''

Updated doodler sketch

The updated "age progression" sketch of the Doodler serial killer.

The San Francisco Police Department on Tuesday upped their reward for tips leading to the identification and arrest of the infamous “Doodler” serial killer, who terrorized San Francisco’s gay community with a string of murders in the 1970s.
Investigators also released an updated forensic sketch of the suspect, which shows age progression and is based on their previous drawings from 1975 and 2019.

This Friday marks 49 years to the day since the so-called "Doodler" committed the first of his six killings near Ocean Beach from 1974 to 1975. Throughout most of the years after, police believed there were five victims, however, a 2021 revealed a sixth victim who was assaulted near Land’s End in April, 1975.

The Doodler, is an unidentified serial killer believed responsible for up to 16 murders and three assaults of men in San Francisco, California, between January 1974 and September 1975. The nickname was given due to the perpetrator’s habit of sketching his victims prior to their sexual encounters and slayings by stabbing. The perpetrator met his victims at gay nightclubs, bars and restaurants.

Now some 45+ years later San Francisco police on Tuesday announced the identification of the sixth suspected victim of a serial killer.

““As a result of a new investigation, it is believed that Warren Andrews may be the sixth victim of the ‘Doodler,’” the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement released yesterday. “On April 27, 1975, Andrews was a victim of an assault at Land’s End. Andrews was found unconscious and never regained consciousness, dying several weeks later. All six (6) victims are believed to be Gay Caucasian males.”

Police reportedly have a suspect who was interviewed at the time of the killings and may still be alive today, but need further help from witnesses to make an arrest.

At the time, activist Harvey Milk publicly expressed empathy for the victims who refused to speak with police stating, “I understand their position. I respect the pressure society has put on them.” Milk elaborated that the surviving victims likely feared damaging relationships with family and in the workforce.

Police also increased the reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of the the “Doodler” from $200,000 to $250,000.

I could be wrong, but I thought I read detectives have a suspect but dont have sufficient evidence to connect him to the crimes, hence no arrest.
